OK - I started having problems on 12/13 at 11:30 pm

After many issues I finally went to your website, downloaded your spyware checker and found

AdRevoler 2 entries ;Bookmark express 1 entry
casolemedia 1 entry ; Clickbank 1 entry
directtrack 2 entries ; hitbox 1 entry
mediaples 2 entries ; smitfaud-c.coreservices 1 entry
spywareBOT 1 entry ; tagasaurus 1 entry
virtumonde.ddc 6 entries ; virtumonde 7 entries

Deleted all ; did many scans with your software in regular and safe mode. Went through your procedure with Kaspersky and spybot S&D in safe mode and hijack this

Kaspersky results 9 viruses ; 27 objects infected
----------------------

3 virus ; 3 objests prior to program files ; nothing in program files ; 5 virus, 12 objects in system volume restore ; windows system 32 1 virus 11 objects

------------------------
Ran Hijackthis in regular mode but disconnected from the internet. Here are the results

It is much appreciated you looking into this for me.
Of note : I am running Java2 runtime Env SE v1.4.2-03
Since 12/13 I have not run any windows updates - too paranoid

My g: drive which is external to my computer and hooked up via USB has disappeared ; not sure if I uninstalled ; will wait for an answer from you if I should reinstall or not.

It is my backup of data ; only a few weeks out of date

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You have a marker for it: C:\WINDOWS\system32\vpwywjtu.dll so I think we can assume this is a Vundo infection:
You have a Vundo infection which can be hard to remove. This will take some time and unless you are patient, understand how to follow directions and are comfortable working on your computer, you may want to seek local professional help. If you wish to proceed, read and follow the directions carefully.

Information first:
See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< BADLY out of date and likely why you are infected. Download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

My g: drive which is external to my computer and hooked up via USB has disappeared ; not sure if I uninstalled ; will wait for an answer from you if I should reinstall or not.Unless you need this, I would wait until you are clean to reinstall it, if you have information on it, you will also want to scan it. Kaspersky online scanner will scan the drive for you at that point.

Since we do not have a Kaspersky scan at this point, please do not scan and post one until I request it. Remember the junk can download more, stay offline except when troubleshooting until you are clean.

If all that works for you, I would like to start like this:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< return here and rename HJT, call it ningauble42.exe that will work. Restart and post a new HJT log and we should be able to see this infection. I will respond with the first directions as soon as possible after you post that HJT log.

Thanks...Phil:santa:

Welcome to my nightmare and thanks for helping.

I did as instructed. Deleted Java older version, got online, downloaded new version and installed. I verified it is Java (TM) 6 Update 3 134 MB

Rebooted and ran a highjackthis

Results below

I have a quick question: not sure how often I should be checking for responses back from you and how quick you want an answer back. With the holidays I don't want to interupt you either. I will be bacially unavailable 12/24-12/25 and 12/23 just in the morning.

Thanks for returning you information, please read the directions carefully:

Download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

Deleted Java older version, got online, downloaded new version and installed.
My directions and what you said you did were not the same?

I am retired and respond early am EST but I do check through the day so the responses are timely and the malware can be gone and you back to normal as quick as possible. Much will depend on you, but I encourage you to take the time you need to be careful, if not mistakes will be made.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

It is important the instructions are followed, the tools will not work unless used as instructed.

1) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

http://vundofix.atribune.org/ <<< tutorial

"Download VundoFix" to your Desktop

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot. Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

(wait until you finish to post reports and logs)

2) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the Vundofix.txt, combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Did as intructed to the letter - this was too long so I removed the HJT log ; will post in next post by me.

To your question, yes I deleted Java first and then installed the new version - I will be very careful from now on

Disabled teetimer, rebooted and ran vundo fix (27 minutes)
Found 17 instances ; removed 16 and said could not delete hgggebx.dll ; rebooted ; clicked remove on reboot, still stated can't remove, but rebooted and on reboot vundfix came up and nothing was there.

On reboot got an error

c\windonws32\vpwywjtul.dll specified module count not be found - clicked OK

Here is the Vundo text file

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, read and follow the instructions carefully.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Ok, did as instructed

downloaded ATF cleaner on clean computer
Created Vundo file
Launced Vundofix and dragged file into Vundo - clicked remove vundo
No errors - rebooted

Got error about windows\system32\vpwywyjtu.dll again

Computer rebooted OK with no Vundofix questions

Did as exactly instructed with highjackthis

VPWYWJTU.DLL was not in the system32 directory - noticed it in the vindofix directory with a .bad after it

Ran ATF clearner (cleaned 3,336 KB)

Restarted computer
no errors in startup this time
Seemed to be a lot of hard drive activity

Here is the Vundofix log

Again, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this work.
Donations will be forthcoming. This is an invaluble service that needs to be recognized by our goverment who seems to do little in trying to help "the little people".

After this is over, would like some suggestions. As I am only running the windows firewall, that will have to change. I did use Zonealarm before, but got away from it. Also, will have Spybot S&D running, I have Avast virus protection. I was also thinking about loading superantispyware.

Any suggestions would be great

Going to eat, be back in about 2 hrs.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, sometimes the junk screams liked that as we are tearing it from your computer. This item:
windows\system32\vpwywyjtu.dll is not showing in the HJT log. Did you navigate to the System32 folder and make sure the file was gone?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vpwywjtu.dll <<< make sure that file is gone

Let's see what Kaspersky has to report. Remove combofix, C:\qoobox\quarantine\, Vundofix and the C:\VundoFix Backups

Please use these settings and use as many posts as you need to post the scan results.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

When we finish I will post information from experts in the malware removal/security field, once you have read that information, if you still have questions, please post them.

Thanks

Somewhere in the previous log I did mention I looked for the vpwywjtu.dll file in the windows/system32. anyway, it was not there so it must have removed it.

Turned teetimer back on
rebooted

combofix.exe remove
c:\qoobox\quarintine directory removed (other stuff I left alone

vundofix removed
fundofix backup file directory removed
recylebin emptied

Connected to the internet (x those fingers)

started up kaspersky - did not ask about activeX, but I did run this program prior to posting so that might be it.

It did some file downloads, but I had most of them so I figured I was OK.

Did clicks as instructed concerning options

Started Kaspersky at 11:58 am central daylight time (CDT)

Last time it took about 2 hrs too run. Will post when finished.

I did as instructed with one difference - I could not put myself on the internet without reactivating teetimer. Not sure if this screwed up anything - if yes I am sorry.

Kaspersky scan took about 70 minutes ; it found 2 viruses and 3 objects

Looks like it is in c:\temp\ulsaa1212.exe\
& in same directory data0002, data0004

Anyway here it is

Thanks for returning the scan results.

Delete that Temp folder and the contents

C:\TEMP\ulSaa1212.exe/data0002 ------> Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Small.buy
C:\TEMP\ulSaa1212.exe/data0004 ------> Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Small.gzs

70 minutes is about normal for a scan on a clean computer. TeaTimer has nothing to do with your internet connection, if you are having issues with conections, you would want to contact technical support at your Internet Service Provider.

Happy Holidays:santa:

Based on what I read I think we are done once I delete the temp file correct?

At this point I am going to then put zonealarm firewall on and get a copy of superantispyware on my computer unless you object.

Again, thanks for the help if we are done.

Happy Holidays

That is a Temp folder, not a file and it has at least two bad items in it, delete the complete folder. I suggest you review the information in the links I posted so you can benefit from what those folks have to say. When it all comes down to it though, it is your computer and you may do as you wish.

Thanks

I am in the process of reading. I will be clearing my restore points shortly and making a clean one.

Again, I can't say how much people like us appreciate what you guys & ladies do out there for us.

Contribution will be forthcoming.

If there is anything I can do to help this out other than funds I will. I am no computer expert, but willing to help if I can

Again, Happy Holidays
