I received an "alert" telling me my computer was infected. I saw what looked like a download and immediately severed the internet connection.

With the computer offline, I ran Norton AntiVirus, Spybot and Adaware. The Norton autoprotect feature found a virus identified only as a downloader. It notified me that this infection was partially cleaned. I shutdown and re-ran Norton with no result. I ran Spybot in safe mode. There were no hits.

CPU use spikes without activating programs.

I downloaded HijackThis from a clean machine and transferred it via usb.

Attached is the log.

The operating system is Windows XP, Service Pack 2. Both the security patches and the anti-virus software are up to date.

I don't see anything in the HJT log that looks like malware. Let's have Kaspersky take a look.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

That "Alert" may have been malware, that's what they do, try to convince you there is an issue to sell you fraudulent products.

I would update your security programs and run them. See if you can spot what it causing the CPU usage, it can be many things.
