Norton no longer active. Cannot download spybot and cannot access control panel or other admin programs as I get pop up which indicates that function has been blocked by my admin. Below is HJT Log.....Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi drake22 and welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Post:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- combofix report

Saved combo fix directly to desktop and tried to open. Run screen appears and I chose to run program--nothing happens after I choose run. I have found that task manager is disabled, norton disabled and an outdated version of spyware doctor is disabled. I attempted prior to my first posting to install a newer version of spyware doctor but it would not install. Appears computer has been given new admin password and I have been locked out of all admin functions. Found newly installed wn852 which appears to have been installed prior to me experiencing problems.

You help is greatly appreciated. Is there a trick to the combo fix that perhaps I missed or is it not running due to part of the bigger problem such as the malware?

Hi

Install and run these tools in safe mode (run both of them 2-3 times):

http://www.misec.net/products/TrojanHunterSetup.exe
http://www.simplysup.com/download/dl/trsetup.exe

And try again combofix after that, please.

Sorry for the delay--thank you for the trojan links ran both 3 times each. After running both I do have control back with control panel and task manager. Also no longer have pop ups indicating infection and need to download spyware. Attempted to use combofix in safe mode which did not launch. Deleted and downloaded the program again in safe mode. Attempted to use but again it would not launch. After double clicking I get a security warning that the publisher cannot be verified I select run but program will not launch.

Thank you for your patience.....

I have attempted to run combo fix in both safe mode and normal mode after continuous running of both trojan removal tools. Still have issues with registery keys and occassional pop up. Also issue with registery blocking use of control panel, task manager and other itmes. Norton not active nor can I launch other spyware programs that were loaded prior to problem. I have run out of options for launching combo fix any suggestions?

Thanks again for your help and patience.

Hi

We'll check if this works instead of combofix:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

Hi

Good, trojan hunter & scanner seemed to have removed some stuff :)

First we'll need to backup registry:

Start -> Run -> regedit -> ok. Then File -> Export. Give it a name and press Save.

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on Desktop

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Medichi"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"appinit_dlls"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders]
"SecurityProviders"="msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll"

It should look like this -> http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/reg.gif

Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.

(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here (http://www.nellie2.co.uk/file.htm#How_to_Make_a_.Reg_File_) with screenshots.)

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Medichi] medichi.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wowfx.dll

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Download OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe) by OldTimer to your Desktop.

Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllgh8jkd1q8.exe
C:\WINDOWS\murka.dat
C:\WINDOWS\medichi.exe
C:\WINDOWS\wsystmp_tvn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\wsystmp_jri.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wowfx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\user32.dat

Click the Move It button.
The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).

Reboot.

Re-run dss.

Post:

- otmoveit log
- dss report (main.txt only)

Hi

A bit better.

I think one file might be infected and causes re-infection

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

Please click this link-->Jotti (http://virusscan.jotti.org/)

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\beep.sys

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Hi

Download a fresh copy of beep.sys from here:

http://www.andymanchesta.com/Files/XP/beep.sys

Copy it to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\ and choose yes when it asks to overwrite.

Reboot.

After that, fix these with HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Medichi] medichi.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Medichi2] medichi2.exe

And this:

First we'll need to backup registry:

Start -> Run -> regedit -> ok. Then File -> Export. Give it a name and press Save.

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on Desktop

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"appinit_dlls"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders]
"SecurityProviders"="msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll"

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\C]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{7182b2c0-4680-11da-b969-806d6172696f}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,00,00

It should look like this -> http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/reg.gif

Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.

(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here (http://www.nellie2.co.uk/file.htm#How_to_Make_a_.Reg_File_) with screenshots.)

And this:

Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.

C:\WINDOWS\murka.dat
C:\WINDOWS\medichi.exe
C:\WINDOWS\medichi2.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wowfx.dll

No such luck. Same error message after using last known good setting.

Hi

That seems to be part of Broadcom Corporation Wireless Network software.

So please uninstall and re-install that and let me know how it works after that.

drake22

Looked for Broadcom wireless sofware and found none. I have no way to re-install this type of software. The only thing found is the wireless modem on my computer. Not sure what software or uninstall needed to be completed. I am not sure if this is some form of wireless communication as the desk top does not function properly and I am unable to open many programs without them shutting down immediately upon opening. The computer is slow to load and I have noticed the task bar is not configured the way it used to be.

Anything else this could be? Should I re-load the save registery keys?

Thanks again for your assistance.....

Hi

No I don't think that is related to registry keys we removed. Something went wrong, that is sure.

Do you have Windows CD handy? I think repair installation might be best option here.

No windows CD. Dell computer came pre-loaded without any CD. Looked for way to back up but was informed by Dell I could always use computer back up. The error message will load even before I log onto the computer. The error message will appear prior to my log on--don't know if that mean anything other than it seems to be a system related item.

The error message becomes continuous whenever I begin to interface with computer. I will enter ok and the error message will reload almost immediately. I do have a wireless printer. Could that have anything to do with this error message? The error message interferrs with every interface I have with the computer so it is difficult for me to even search for items or search programs.

If you think it is a good idea I will un-install the printer software and attempt to re-load.

Thanks again....

Printer not found in system. Also discovered no internet connection or Network settings for computer. Noticed no wireless connection in task bar but also no evidence of wired network connection. Unable to locate any type of network connections on system. Not sure what the solution is but don't believe printer is the problem. More likely as you stated earlier problem due to wireless connection within computer. The modem is not found on the computer and no back up disk or restore disk. Attempted to use computer restore and received error message advising restore was unable to protect my computer and indicated to reboot and try again. Attempted to reset computer from boot screen again with no luck.

any further suggestions?

Thank you for your patience....

Hi

So do you have a restore partition on your hard drive?

yes but I cannot access it at least by the means I am aware of other than to use the system restore tab located in the program section

Sorry it is late and my last post did not make much sense. What I meant was the only way I know to access it is at the system restore tab located under the all program tabs. I have attempted to access it and it provides an error advising it cannot protect my computer and I should reboot and try again--does not work nor does reset at boot screen.

Hi

If Windows came pre-installed and without CD, there is usually
a recovery partition which you can use for restoring.

This (http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/fixes.htm)
should help.

Hi

Actually we can try this before that.

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager

Click view and show hidden devices

Find Beep under non plug and play

Right-click it, choose Disable.

Rename beep.sys to beep.sys_ (or anything else than beep.sys, all copies, do a search. One should be in C:\windows\system32\drivers and another in C:\windows\system32\dllcache (if present))

Reboot.

Tell me if it works better now?

Sorry for the delay---needed some rest.

Followed your instruction and problem persists. Should I follow your previous instructions to reset the computer to factory conditions? Will this cause loss of all software and files placed on the computer I installed?

Thanks again for all your help.....

Hi

"Should I follow your previous instructions to reset the computer to factory conditions? Will this cause loss of all software and files placed on the computer I installed?"

Yes, that might be the easiest way here. It will unless you have backups or be able to do backups before that. So I really recommend to take backups before that.

I am sorry to have been vague earlier. Yes I did want to know if you thought my only chance to restore the computer was to use the Dell DSR.

I have tried everything I can think of to back up the windows partition...external hard drive, jump drives and copy to cd. The computer will not copy or move any items in the windows partition either to an external source or to the DSR partition.

Do you have any suggestions?

Hi

Sorry but I don't see any other solutions.

I can of course ask others.

Hi

That might also be hardware issue.

I recommend that you check RAM chips.
