After looking at my mail I was unable to turn my computer. I got a message the window in the middle of running a lengthy program. Thus I unplugged the computer. I am concerned that someone could be using my computer.

In the past I had the problem when I opened word and went on line. Doing a restore fixed it. I contacted McKafee and got no help.

Specify your OS (Operating System) and the mail you use. OE (Outlook Express, ThunderBird, etc.) or Internet Mail (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo!, etc.).

I just find it odd how when you say you check your mail, the computer just turns off for no apparent reason.

What was the message in the middle? And what lengthy program?

And I don't understand when you say when you open "word" and go online.... What is "word"? Microsoft Office Word? Notepad? Wordpad?

What do mean by "on line"?

I don't see how you could get any kind of malware from Microsoft Word...

Microsoft Word Documents (.doc) can be infected with macro viruses.
If you have Microsoft Word, go to Help and find there more about macros.

Hilde: When that warning message was shown, did it look like in an attachment?
(Note: the green window look is just a windows theme.)

The user can be infected with either a virus or malware. If the .doc (Word) document is infected, it might as well mean bad news for the user. Now we just got to wait for Hilde's reply. If the user ever replies...
