We have run Spybot and found the Virtumonde virus. Used Spybot to remove most of the Trojans, rebooted the system, removed again. Spybot still finds virtumonde.prx and can't remove.
Help! Thanks.

Hi there,

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Hello, Thank you for helping us.
Here is our combofix log, followed by hjt log.
Should we be concerned about no Windows recovery console?
Let us know what to do next.

Hi

I think we can do without recovery console here :)

Start hjt, do a system scan, check (if found):
if not set by yourself --> R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Close browsers and fix checked.

Uninstall old Adobe Reader and get the latest one here (http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm).

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
c:\winnt\system32\geroyumo.dll

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run-]
"riditigiri"=-

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

* Go here (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner) to run an online scanner from ESET.
Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan

Hi,
I removed old adobe reader. New Adobe Reader 9 is downloaded to my machine but it requires Windows 2000 Service pack 4 or higher. We have Service pack 3 currently installed.
Should I change to service pack 4, now, or wait until after we get rid of viruses?
Or should I install an older version of Adobe reader that works with SP 3 for now?
Not running combo fix with Code, yet. Waiting for your reply.
Thanks.

Hi

Better install sp4 after system is clean. If you need Adobe Reader meanwhile then install older version or Foxit Reader (without toolbar).

Hello again,
I will Wait to install SP4 until clean, not worrying about PDF files for now.
Here's the latest.
Ran ComboFix with Code... It prompted me to install an update of ComboFix, which I did first. It updated and continued. Near the end, some errors about incomplete parenthesis occured. Then, it posted the Fix log. See below.

Then Ran ATF cleaner. The Prefetch selection was disabled... I could not check that box. I Proceeded with the cleaning, nonetheless.

Continued with your instructions.
here are the logs you requested in order of completion:

Looks like ESET findings are all in quarantined items. Before we clean those I'd like to know how's the system running now. Do you have any antivirus program installed there?

patsfamily08
2009-01-05, 22:27
No Antivirus software is running on our machine. Just a firewall. (apparently not enough protection?) Never had a problem before...
We have an old Norton Antivirus 2003 remnant, but I don't think it was installed, or it was deleted.
We are running Sunbelt firewall, the free version, so no extras.
Also we have Spybot search and destroy, installed but not running the Immunize stuff, just the scan.
I don't think we have any Antivirus programs that come with windows.

So, do you have a recommendation for an Antivirus program for this old Windows 2000 environment? (when we upgrade our system, sometime in the future, we will get all new software, etc.)

let me know what to do next... Thanks!

Hi

A few good and free antivirus programs are linked in this post a below :)

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Good free antivirus programs are:
Antivir (http://free-av.com/en/download/1/download_avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html)
Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Hello, sorry for the delay in responding...

Thank you so much for your help!

So far so good with the Virtumonde virus. It appears to be gone. I get no more errors on system startup. and spybot doesn't find virtumonde.prx. Whew!

I guess the quarantined items from ESET were of no concern?

I did uninstall Combofix.

I will do updating as you have suggested. A couple of questions...

I began by updating my firewall. I installed the updates from Sunbelt software. then it didn't work properly (asking for a password that I did not set) so I uninstalled it. Will try to reinstall. But, Should I be using this particular firewall (ie. is it safe)?

Also, I went to the Windows update site and found that I must need to install
Service Pack 4 to continue to get updates for my Windows 2000 machine. They are not supplying updates for sp3 anymore. So, I will install SP4 today.
(don't know how long it will take.) I assume I can install the SP4 safely from Microsoft site.

I went to change IE settings to those you suggested and found that those settings were already present. So, clicked OK and Apply anyway.

Will look into Antivirus software you suggested, also. Can I do all these windows updates before getting firewall fixed and antivirus software running?
Kind of gun shy now...as you can see.

Also, should I keep posting to this (malware) forum if I have more questions with security?
Thanks again, and again.

Hi

Sunbelt firewall is ok :)

Can I do all these windows updates before getting firewall fixed and antivirus software running?
Might be best to get firewall and antivirus running first.

Also, should I keep posting to this (malware) forum if I have more questions with security?
Depends on the questions. If those are related to some software functionality for example then forum of that correspondent software would be more suitable place :) Basically, we concentrate on malware removal issues here.

Hello,
I thought I'd give a final update FYI.

After removal of virtumonde, updating to Windows SP4 and several other windows updates(72!), plus updating firewall and getting an Antivirus program running....
Our system seems to be running smoothly with no problems. We now feel comfortable using it again!
It is a little bit slower now that the antivirus program is running, but not too noticeable. We aren't sure about HOST files. We might someday do that.
Spybot still finds adware cookies, from the same places double click, zedo, etc. We're not sure how important these are to block. But no more virtumonde.prx!!!
Anyway, thanks again for all your help.

Blade81
2009-01-08, 19:47
You're welcome :)

No need to worry about those cookies. However, if you want reduce their appearance then I recommend mvps hosts file.
