Won't "Check for Problems" After Downloading Updates

Good evening,
I have the bootable Spybot S&D (about = Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6.2.46 latest detection date 11/19/2010). After booting from CD, the updates download without problems (downloading 2 updates). When I click "Check for Problems" the following message box appears: "You need to install the detection updates first by using the integrated updated or the manual updater." However, when I click the "update" button, the box appears stating no updates are available.

I booted twice to CD and had the same problem both times. Does this sound like a software bug or a really crafty piece of malware?

My computer runs s-l-o-w-e-r than usual and also runs hotter (it is a laptop). It makes me think I have something brewing beyond the software I installed.
