View Full Version : Hint of the day
Situation: Spybot-S&D offers some text description about most products.
Experienced: if you click the button at the right of the results list, a window showing this information will appear. Many users do not know about it though.
Expected: as first entry in the results, show a status entry hinting at the additional info (and possibly other stuff).

What a bad idea! I spent a lot time figuring out what this malware named "Hint of the Day" might be. Clicking the button to the right did not help. If you MUST presents hints of the day, please don't put them in the area designed for scan results.
How about a more constructive post?
Why did clicking the button to the right not help?
And where else would you imagine it could go?
Btw, why did you want to re-suggest this feature if you don't like it?
I use Spybot infrequently. I just installed and ran Spybot 1.6 on a new machine, and the first thing that popped up in the scan was "Hint of the Day". I did "Click the bar at the right of this to see more information!", but saw nothing. Naturally, I Googled for more info on this spyware I had never heard of called "Hint of the Day". I came here. About the time I finished registering to add my comment, I thought: "Oh, hint of the day!" (facepalm).
I have a comment and a question:
I suppose I will not be the last person to mistake the "hint" for a spyware report.
Where's the hint?

You get used to it , needs implementation specially for new users, not computer savy like me

There is no "button at the right of the display" on my screen for the "hint of the day". So in conjunction with a recent feature on startup of a popup about various products, the appearance of "hint of the day" in the spybot list of possible threats appears to identify just the sort of thing I'd like to get rid of (the popup) and yet the entry cannot be selected, fixed, etc. I do not know how much of this is coincidental. But I agree with earlier post that this should not be offered in the list of "problems" if it is not really a problem.
BTW - I have a challenge on this PC with certain java scripts which may have something to do with why I don't see a "button" on the right. In Tax Cut software, for example, none of the linked questions display. I suspect I need to reinstall Windows (in my spare time) - but putting that aside, I still would suggest that "hints" should not be in a "problem" list.
Also, BTW-- thanks for a great tool for dealing with unwanted intrusions into the Internet experience. It's very much appreciated!
I added a new feature request for improvements on the current solution here (http://forums.spybot.info/project.php?issueid=300) :)
Hi Folks,
I too was confused by "Hint of the Day" . I think it might be enough to just rename it something like "SpyBot S&D Hint of the Day" . Better though I think, would be that it didn't appear in the Problems pane, lest it be taken for a problem. I would propose a toolbar button or even a pop-up window (... Did I say "pop-up"? Sorry.) that appears on program start. I suggest the latter not so much because its the best implementation but because its the implementation everyone else uses.
Take a look at where it is in 2.0, there it should be quite clear :)

I've never seen the above page in any version of SS&D. What is the description 2.0 in reference to? I'm using v1.6. How about a simple checkbox in settings to eliminate HINT OF THE DAY. A "hover" dialog pointing to a help file or some other instruction would be useful as to what "Hint of the Day" is designed to accomplish, where is is located, etc.
I probably should have written "where it will be in 2.0" ;)
1.6.1 (beta) has the hint solved in a way between the two as well. If by hover you mean more or less a popup, that's something we try to avoid ;)

That "page" is from a draft of a "page" that PepiMK (Patrick M. Kolla) is proposing will be included in a future release of Spybot (Spybot 2.0).
MODS: I can't start a "new Issue" yet but I want to post this. Please move to its own topic. Thanks.
I have either a suggestion for more efficient use or a question of how to do what I need:
How can you eliminate the located threats which Spybot has found if you have to disrupt the search in the middle of it?
If you can't do this--would you consider adding this feature so threats can be removed even when the search has to be interrupted? It would be very useful, at least for my situation. Using a computer that is shared by several persons, no one seems to have time to run spy-bot to completion. When someone finally runs it, it is often interrupted when needed by someone else. This postpones searching/removal of infections even longer.
If you could erase the already located infections whenever searching has to be interrupted, this searching would not be wasted computer time.
An even better improvement would be to be able to start searching again from where the interruption took place. (Once the other user is finished.)
That way with shared computers where searches are often interrupted, the computer could still eventually be completely checked much easier.
Thanks.
spybot is not removing "spywareGaurd2008" despite many attempts and also having spybot run when system restarts. Any suggestions? Many thanks in advance.

Your post is off topic and irrelevent to the main Topic (Hint Of The day) please repost in the main forum or If you think you have a Malware problem then post in the Malware Removal Forum (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22) but read the stickies BEFORE Posting and don't bump your thread or you won't receive any help as the Experts look for a 0 post count.
I think that the people who are getting confused aren't clicking on "Hint of the day" and then clicking on the button to the right. That gives you the hint of the day! :)

Uh...no. I am not confused. I have tried clicking everywhere on that bar. NOTHING happens. Respectfully, Hint of the Day should have the ability to turn it off. Don't need it, don't want it.
Otherwise GREAT program. Thanks!
I think you're talking about stuff that's not "up to date" at all, jbachandouris ;)
1.6.1 has a clearly visible Hide permanently button and an entry on the Settings page, and 2.0 has it in such a different place that the bar issue does not exist that way. In 2.0 we feel that they're not in the way too much, and hope that some of the topics will make a lot of support issues unnecessary. if it could be clicked away, people would click it away and not notice updated hints for example ;)

Did you try clicking on the label that says Hint of the day so that it is highlighted then clicking on the Button on the right side?
That should give a description for Hint of the day which is the hint of the day.
You can also click on the button to the right so that it has popped out then click on Hint of the day or whatever infection/warning you may have and it will give you a description on that selected infection/warning.
That button is very very useful...

Is 1.61 the beta? I am using 1.6.0.
1.6.1 is a beta version of Spybot-S&D.
You can download it here if you want: Spybot - Search & Destroy (http://forums.spybot.info/downloads.php?id=44) (1.6.1.41)
