Numerous Issues Found, Can't Run Spybot or Install Latest HijackThis

Hi,

Ordinarily I'm pretty successful in resolving these issues (often with the help of this forum and google), but I just can't seem to fix my current PC (Dell XPS, Windows XP) trouble. I've been at this for 3 days now, and I think it's time to ask for some expert help.

Here are my symptoms:
- Browser redirects on google searches. (Though pasting URLs directly in the URL bar works.)
- Numerous reported and supposedly fixed viruses and trojans.
- I've been working in SafeMode, and everytime I reboot in SafeMode with Networking to test the supposed fixes, I seem to get more viruses and trojans.
- Spybot hangs after (sometimes during) scans, and especially when I click the fix button.
- I can't install the latest HijackThis. I get an error: "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." (My account is the administrator account.)

What I've tried:
- Scanning with Spybot (fails)
- Scanning with SUPERAntispyware (seems to fix the latest round, but not the source)
- Scanning with Malwarebytes (finds and fixes different ones than SUPERAntispyware.)
- Scanning with HijackThis v1.99.1 (Helped initially, but I'm not finding any obvious evil-doers.)
- Scanning with McAffee, my default antivirus (pre-installed on this PC)

I'm not attaching the old HijackThis log because the FAQ told me not to do so and await further instruction. Please let me know you if you'd like me to do so, I have the latest.

I'm running out of ideas, please help!

You ran Malwarebytes, open it and go to the logs tab and post the last report please



Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.

• DDS.com
• DDS.scr
• DDS.pif
  
• Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
• A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
• Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
• Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
• Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

This time I booted up in Safe Mode (no networking) in the hopes of having better luck removing it. I think it worked, my PC didn't crash this time. (See log text below.)

If it helps, I did a little googling of the things listed in the HJT log while waiting for help. It seems that the following line is indicates another bad actor:

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [davclnt.exe] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\davclnt.exe (User 'SYSTEM')

However, when I look in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP now, I don't find see the file. Perhaps it was removed in a prior scan, but for some reason the entry wasn't removed. (I am suspicious of the files I do see in there.)

As I mentioned before, whenever I boot up with networking or in normal mode, I seem to get a new infection. (Even if I am not connected to the internet.) Just before I posted to this forum, scans by various antivirus tools found and (supposedly) fixed: pincav.e, fakealert_krypt.b, dnschanger.as, fraud.msantispyware2009, win32.tdss.reg and win32.tdss.rtk. Hopefully this information helps, or at least doesn't make things any more confusing.

You have a few other bad ones besides the one you pointed out. Lets see if Combofix with remove them.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
• Under Main choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

I'm still in the process of running these tools, but I saw something I wanted to note before I close it and forget. When I booted up this time in normal mode, I got a "System settings protector" dialog, that looks very much like the dialog you get to report bugs to Microsoft. (Debug, Send Error Report and Don't Send buttons.) I don't know if it's a legitimate error or not, but I'm suspicious. I've never seen this one before.

OK, lets see what the CF Scan finds

Apologies for the delay. I think from now on, I'll be running these scans exclusively in Safe Mode (unless instructed otherwise, of course). ComboFix took much longer than the 10 minutes it mentioned, and crashed after a reboot- the screen turned into a bunch thin tan bars.

The good news is that the Recovery Console appears to have been installed successfully, and ComboFix ran just fine in Safe Mode.

Yeah, that should be safe. That's a little code I was messing around with. Also, I use Firefox as my default browser. I rarely use IE, and I know I set that value.

Also another thing, before I forget, I have Windows Update set up to download and wait for me to give the go ahead to install. Apparently an update downloaded and I see the little yellow shield in the task bar indicating it's ready to go, even when I'm not connected. Once we're done here, do you think that will be safe to run, and is there some way to reset that in case it's been infected? (Or perhaps this is still the malware pretending to be windows update?)

Great, lets make sure there is no rootkit installed.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

• Double click GMER.exe.

Is there an alternative to this tool? It keeps crashing when I run it in normal mode (even blue-screened once), and the screen is too large for me to see the buttons below the scan button when I run it in safe mode. (Yeah, this laptop has a pretty small screen. Nice for portability, terrible right now.) Or perhaps there's a version of the tool that's sized down for smaller screens? Argh!

Run this tool

• Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

Extract the file and run it.

Once completed it will create a log in your C:\ drive called TDSSKiller_* (* denotes version & date)

Yeah, I was worried I might have some sort of rootkit thing going on too. But try, and try again, I couldn't get GMER to run successfully- I even let it go for something like 3 hours, and by the end of it, my machine was barely responsive, and the GMER window was completely blanked out.

I ran the tool as described, and while the file was created, there wasn't anything in it. I ran it in safe mode, should I boot up in normal for it to work properly?

No, thats fine. I was just looking for bad drivers that may have been installed in the last month or so and none have, so thats good news malwarewise.

How are things running now ?

Hold on a second. I may have been looking at the wrong Files.txt. I just noticed that another Files.txt, Hidden.txt and UNI.txt were created in the same directory as the tool. The Files.txt I was looking at was at C:\Files.txt. Does that matter?

In terms of how things are running now, things seem to be running a little faster now in general, however, I McAffee seems to be having some issues. Let me check running Spybot and doing google searches and see how those are behaving now.

Also, I read somewhere about old version of Java runtimes sometimes making infections like possible. Any advice on that?

Uh oh, my browser (firefox is the one I generally use) is still redirecting on Google searches. It redirected to some website that tried to download a file immediately. I closed the browser and disconnected from the internet again.

Also, Google chrome is still not loading, or working at all apparently. (I tried this while connected, of course.)

I did not test Spybot yet, as it looks like I still have a problem. Man this is so frustrating....

FYI, I tested Spybot by running a scan. As before, it crashes once the scan has completed. Because it crashed, I couldn't see much more than reports of tracking cookies. Also, WildTangent, which I understand is bundled with some games, but has a bad reputation. (I have a legal copy of "World Of Goo" installed, so that could be the reason for it.)

OK, ran FileLister in normal windows. C:\Files.txt has nothing in it. Also, the Files.txt that FileLister opens up while running had nothing in it.

I was poking around, and noticed that both Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware were out of date, and allowed both to update. (Not sure how badly out of date their malware detection information was, I did install Malwarebytes last weekend.)

I ran a quick scan with Malwarebytes, and it found nothing. However, SUPERAntiSpyware's scan found the following:

Also, one last thing. I tested Internet Explorer, and it is still redirecting. (Firefox is still working fine.) I should have tested it before, but like I mentioned, I rarely use it, and don't really trust it even when I'm not infected.

GMER with Defogger

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.

• The application window will appear
• Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
• Click Yes to continue
• A 'Finished!' message will appear
• Click OK
• DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK

IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.





Next:

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

• Double click GMER.exe.

• If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
• In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED ...
  • IAT/EAT
  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
  • Show All (don't miss this one)

• Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
• Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
• Save the log where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
Please copy and paste the report into your Post.



To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.

• The application window will appear
• Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
• Click Yes to continue
• A 'Finished!' message will appear
• Click OK
• DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK

IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.

Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

Quick question. I'm trying to disable Spybot's TeaTimer per the linked instructions, but I can't find the TeaTimer entry in the System Startup section... Can I disable it via msconfig or something (provided I can find it)?

No problem, disable the TeaTimer this way


Disable the TeaTimer, leave it disabled, do not turn it back on until we're done or it will prevent fixes from taking

• Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
• If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
• On the left hand side, Click on Tools
• Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
• Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
• Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect

Uh oh... GMER didn't crash, but my PC rebooted abruptly... Is it supposed to do that? I didn't touch anything...

Look for the log on your desktop

Unfortunately, I don't see any log! :confused:

The only thing I see is the defogger_disable log, and that was only requested if an error occurred running defogger. I did notice that defogger did NOT reboot as described when it finished running... Perhaps a lengthy delay in doing so? Man, and GMER was running just fine too. (I need a banging-head-against-wall emoticon.)

Should I try running GMER again, or do I need to go through the defogger process? Or?

Let's try gmer again, if it won't run we can try something else
