i presume that the back ups are of the windows vista host file that i put in the drivers/etc folder...

only because when i ran spybot, on my win 7 comp, firefox wasn't immunised so i just re ran...

Bingo! it was spybot that blocked those sites in firefox!

Is there any way of setting spybot to run on demand? so i can protect my win7 computer without spybot running to conflict with my other...
