Spybot-S&D 1.6, Release Candidate 2

Didn't encounter any problems yet.
I am sorry if this has been discussed before (probably it has):oops: what happened to the eraser function in the context menu? it was a cool function and stronger than unlocker.

Trying to download but KIS 8.0.0.357 is blocking the download with this message:

The objet is INFECTED. The virus discovered is Trojan-GameThief.Win32.OnLineGames.arut.

Downloaded now and didn't get a message from KIS.

P.S.

Install ok.

Still don't have protection for FireFox 3 final.

@ZerO Voltage: those others do use DLLs that plug into Explorer. While possible, this would make both a 32 and 64 bit version necessary and of course creates additional memory footprint which I wanted to avoid.

Bummer. Any other solutions then? My searches have turned up nothing, but then I'm not even too sure what to search on for this.

spybotsd_includes.exe is the manual version of the weekly update. If it would be integrated, we would have to update the main installer once a week. And then, many people wanting the manual update would probably download the full installer every week (then nearly 18 MB) instead of the single manual update (2-3 MB).
spybotsd_includes.exe is not absolutely necessary though, calling the updater after installing works as well, doing it automatically during installation is just an attempt to avoid situations where users ignore the information they need to use the update once first ;)

I think I figured out what happened here. I either only got a partial spybotsd_includes.exe file or the installer or downloader created a 0 byte spybotsd_includes.exe file when it failed to download completely. This would obviously still be allowed to run because it existed with the proper name (which appeared as SPYBOT~1.EXE after 8dot3 short name conversion) and had a .EXE extension, but upon running would fail as I described because it either contained nothing or was corrupted. And the main installer waited because it still saw a SPYBOT~1.EXE process running.

I'm not sure how to address that if the file changes so frequently though. Perhaps the installer could do some sort of file verification or validation on the file after downloading it?

Folder integration is with SDFiles.exe /register only, need to update installer itself as well since /register was intended as a worst-case and debugging help only ;)

Yup, that did it. In fact, selecting folders is even more efficient since the entire file list appears at once (rather than seeing them "pop in" one at a time like when selecting multiple files). I also notice that when selecting multiple files I occasionally get duplicate entries for the same files, but that doesn't happen with folder selections either. :bigthumb:

TeaTimer crash is now being tested here, might even have to do with the remember issue...

Just to be clear, the "remember issue" doesn't seem resolved regardless of the error. Knowing it would crash if I tried stopping/restarting, I also tried changing those selections and rebooting cleanly without manually stopping TeaTimer - and even after the clean reboot the settings still reverted back.

what happened to the eraser function in the context menu? it was a cool function and stronger than unlocker.

It's still there if you select files - but not if you select folders.

But it's not selected by default during installation, so you may not get it if you didn't manually select it then.

@PepiMK:

Can the "Erase using Spybot-S&D" context menu entry be added to folder selections too?

Also, perhaps consider some consistency between this and the new "Scan using Spybot-Search&Destroy" context menu entry. They should probably both either say "... Spybot-S&D" or "... Spybot-Search&Destroy". I think using the abbreviated "... Spybot-S&D" is cleaner and helps avoid increasing the context menu width. ;)

Thanks!

dj.turkmaster:

This is just a usage hint and in no way is it intended to be a criticism. If you use Alt + Print Screen rather than Ctrl + Print Screen, just the active window is copied to the clipboard rather than the entire screen.

TeaTimer issue fixed.

@Always Confused:
Warn on immunizing if browser is open
I must admit that code still wasn't enabled, did so now. Immunization page will, upon showing it the first time in an usage session, tell you which browsers it found open that should be closed instead.

@tchiss:
The heuristics are a bit annoyingly aggressive, will improve with time.

@ME_2&:
Yes, we noticed some graphical glitches with the icons on 98 and ME I think. But decided it was cosmetical only and we wouldn't give up on png quality for those Windows versions (we briefly thought about an additional set of icons, but that would either mean a lot of additional code, or additional need for system resources).

@dj.turkmaster:
Wow, wouldn't have thought someone would actually like that feature, there's been about no feedback on it at all I think, except for people mixing it up with the Shredder feature, which was the main reason we removed it.
Guess we'll have to give it some thought on how to make it available for those who like it :)

@ricari:
I think I saw somewhere else that the problem was with the AppData value in the registry path for Shell Folders (sorry that I didn't go into detail, will once I looked deeper into it; there's also a post "somewhere" :D on this forum dealing with it ;) ).

I'll address more of the open things tomorrow, getting late today, but I wrote myself notes to e.g. look at the stats dates, K-Meleon, AppData (FF3) issue...

Thanks PepiMK,

I have 3 computors running on Vista and only one of my computor has a problem for FireFox 3.

Re Statistics: Statistics work fine here. They're read and written using the systems date local though, so if you had switches your locale recently, that could explain it. Using plain numbers (Unix dates) inside Statistics.ini would be better of course and not depending on the local, but also more difficult to interpret for anyone wanting to interface it. Maybe I should update it to write both.
Re: K-Meleon: the single-user profile thing is something that always hurts me since it's bad for security, but anyway... ;) I did install one in this mode, tested and it was indeed detected, with a fresh profile and all. No idea where the problem should be, I guess I should upload a newer BrowserCI version with some debug mode regarding browser detection to help tracking down the problem...

Re: Firefox 3 not detected: if it is the same problem as in the other thread I remember, I've added a mini fix.
Background for those interested:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\
Contains values with the paths in question as data. These should actually not be used, Microsoft wanted to remove them in the Windows 95 and they were just kept because of compatibility issues with old software. The proper approach would be to query folder constants like CSIDL_APPDATA (Vista has an even newer concept there). The downside of the recommended approach is that it works for the current user only; since Spybot-S&D aims to scan/immunize all users accounts, it has to use the only source of information that is available for all users.
The fix reverts, for the current user, to the API method, continuing to use the registry for other users.

PePIMK,

Quote:"Re: Firefox 3 not detected: if it is the same problem as in the other thread I remember, I've added a mini fix."

What or where is the mini fix?

Please in plain english, I am french, so I need a dictionnary to understand some words:

"The proper approach would be to query "

I've just installed and run RC2 and it completed it's scan in under 15 mins, very nice. These speed inprovments are a vast improvement on the 30 mins plus 1.5.2.20 used to take on my old XP Home machine:bigthumb:.

re Pepi's #31

(Could not access forum 080706, so this a bit late)

re: statistics page
Yes, the statistics.ini reads correctly here also - have no idea why the page reads static 991231. I've been using %y%m%d,%R or %T for years .. some while back I removed a previous grave(`) prefix when it caused a problem with an earlier SpywareBlaster version (hmm, about 071013 if I recall correctly).

The K-Meleon (single user) glitch on my side may relate to another bad personal habit - installing to renamed parent dirs (which thankfully hasn't affected SSD, :) ), which may affect if the expected path has not the default dir-name? Probably best would be a multi-user install of the next version of KM so that it conforms to expected Firefox-like behavior (profile in a subdir of WINDOWS) - current version isn't really broke, so fixing can likely wait.

Possibly something else - machine 'hiccupped' while doing the initial offline immunization prior to taking it online for update (froze and I did a manual, etc during which Windows Registry Checker was allowed to repair and reboot) .. thought little of that at the time, but it could be a purely local anomaly which may be rectified with clean install of the Final.

Yes, the server was down on Sunday, had two hard disks crash right after each other :sick:

Custom application folder names might be responsible indeed; that special condition is detected by fixed path only (AlterEgo does detect them by path information e.g. form registry uninstall location, but that hasn't found it's way there yet since the program executable is not important here usually). Very soon after 1.6, we want to add some kind of tweak option to allow users to add paths manually for special situations.

Going to finish the announcement text now :)

I didn't want to start a new post-RC2 thread for this - but just to follow up, I can confirm that the TeaTimer crash and problem with settings not being remembered is fixed in 1.6 final (1.6.0.30). And the scan option is also now present when selecting folders.

Thanks very much for the great work and support! :bigthumb:

I'll probably need the fix you mentioned if it still applies... RCs 1 and two worked fine after that registry fix, but final ignores any attempts to adjust it. I don't like the idea of running Firefox with no immunization.
