Default Can't download/install/run any anti virus...

When downloading or installing any software trials (anti-virus only), the download always freezes initially. When re-started, the download completes and installs. This also happens when anti-virus is installed from a cd...the initial install is ok, however, I get a freeze when downloading updated virus definitions.

This only happens on 1 pc which leads me to believe there's something "bad" going on with it.

    HELP!

Hi sgregg3 and welcome to the Forums

Please post a HijackThis log to here:
    • Click here to download HijackThis.exe
    • Save HijackThis.exe to your desktop.
    • Create a new folder named HijackThis to your desktop. Move Hijackthis.exe into that folder.
    • Run HijackThis.exe
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
    • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Ok nothing bad in the Kaspersky log...

You seem to have parts from Symantec/Norton running. It may be blcking the installation of a new antivirus.

Then you seem to have this VIRIT antivirus installed. This can also be the reason why the new antiviruses aren't installing. Running 2 or more antiviruses at the same time isn't recommended and this is also why they usually won't install to the computer that already ha an antivirus.

So you have uninstalled Norton right ?
What about this VIRIT antivirus, hae you uninstalled it too ?

    Let me know

i understand the A/V conflicts, but norton was (should've ben) uninstalled using their removal tool. any suggestions for a "complete" removal??

VirIT is freeware I used recently to see if it found anything. I purchased McAfee and will re-install once norton is gone.

Also, as I'm typing this email my taskbar toggles between the normal XP (blue) interface to a win95 (silver) interface and then the system froze????

Last, what am I to do with the download of the ATF cleaner??

    Thanks for all the help!!!

Ok we can take the leftover out manually.

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

    Disable a service
    • Start
    • Run
    • Type services.msc to the field and press enter.
    • A window opens, scroll down to Symantec Core LC
    • Rightclick it and choose Stop
    • Then choose Properties
    • Set Startup to Disabled
    • Click Apply and OK.

    Then, open HijackThis.
    • Open the Misc Tools section
    • Delete an NT service
    • Copy the following line to the box and press OK; Symantec Core LC
    • Answer Yes
    • Close HIjackThis

    Restart the computer.

    Delete the following folder:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

    Run ATF Cleaner
    • Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Then you should uninstall this VirIT before installing McAfee. But please do this at offline mode. Otherwise you computer will be unprotected during the installation.

This is the 2nd time it's frozen. It just began doing this a week or so ago, which is what caused the concern of a virus.

Also, you gave directions for Firefox & Opera browser, but I use IE7. I assume the directions would be the same.

Click IE at the top and choose: SELECT ALL
    Click the EMPTY SELECTED button.
