Default AdAware program will not complete scan

I have used AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy for sometime. I have never had them to fail, but helping a friend clean up his computer AdAware will not complete scan. It always hangs at file C:\Windows\Driver cache\i386 I have updated, uninstalled and reinstalled, ran it in safe mode, and after 5 trys AdAware hangs each time and I have to cancel scan. I usually finds some bad files, but I can't quarantine or remove them. Spybot does run and after 1st run it removed 126 entries, mostly registery stuff. This friends kids really put a lot of junk on computer, which I'm trying to remove. Here is the Hijackthis scan, maybe it will tell someone what I need to do.
    Thanks Fozj

Welcome to the forum, wondering why you posted an Ad-aware problem here? Here is a link to their support forum:
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/ Seems yours may be a common problem as you can see here:
    http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index...=%2Bhangs+i386

I do see this junk in your log, here is information:
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
    http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
    http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/newslette....php#viewpoint

    and this: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows Service] WINSVC.EXE
    which is probably this: http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/anal...jspybotdh.html

I suggest you update your antivirus progam and run a complete system scan to see if it will remove that item if it is still there. If it does not and you want more help then follow these directions:
    "BEFORE you POST" -Preliminary Steps
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
Post the results of the antivirus scan you chose and a new HJT log. Use Post Reply, stay in this topic.

    Thanks

    pskelly,
Thanks for your information. I did remove all the Viewpoint stuff in add & remove programs. I also downloaded and scanned with Kaspersky antivirus, which found one more virus that AVG had not found. I also deleted every thing I could find pertaining to winsvc.exe, including registery items. I did a check disk scan and found one bad sector which was repaired. I then did a complete repair install of Windows XP. Then d/l all security updates from Microsoft. Finally, I ran Ad-Aware again and it finished scan. Computer boots good now and scans with Spybot, Ad-Aware, Microsoft's macilious software tool, and Kaspersky reveal clean computer, I hope.
My Hijackthis scan now is a lot smaller, but I still wonder about a few items mentioned in log. It list some Symantec items, I had uninstalled the 2004 antivirus that was on there when I started on computer? Also couple of comments about missing files?
    Thanks for your assistance, Foz

    pskelly,
Reply to your comment "wondering why you posted an Ad-aware problem here? " I posted my problem there first, but I have not had any responce to the post as of now. I did do a lot of reading of posts on that forum and did what was suggested for a freeze while scanning such as chkdisk etc.
    Thanks, Foz

Thanks for the feedback, it's not good to multiple post like that, it wastes resources of which there are two few. I would suggest you post and ask them to close the topic. If you still need Ad-aware help when we finish, you can open a new topic.

I will be better able to respond when you post the information I requested, see the quote box.

    Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, let me comment on this first:
I still have some problems, can't download IE7 get error 0x80070643, source of error Windows Update Agent
Here is the Knowledge Base article on that issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602 and the Google, appears you are not the only one:
    http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...ror+0x80070643
If you can't figure it out with those resources, then I would use these:
    http://support.microsoft.com/
I missed this earlier and it is a security breach, the Java program is badly out of date:
    http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...80&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\ <<< out of date, download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(the file missing) in the 09 items is a glitch, those files are there)

(016 DPF items can be removed, if you return to the site you would be prompted to download it fresh before you could use the program)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

I will post this information for you now, do not hesitate to post if you have additional questions.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
