Quicktime blocked

For the first time I tried using the TeaTimer and the SDHelper for Internet Explorer. While visiting Apple's web site I was presented with a dialog box that told me the site was trying to modify a registry entry (qttask.exe) and to allow or disallow it. Unfortunately, the dialog box had no buttons on it and the text was almost un-readable due to an overlapping issue. Since I could not see any button I just closed the window and a popup said that qttask.exe has been blocked. I can no longer view any quicktime movie from any site using IE or Firefox. I tried reloading Apple's site to see if I could get that dialog box back, which I did, and somehow managed to allow qttask.exe to run, but I still cannot view any QT movie from any web site.
I tried disabling both SDHelper and TeaTimer but It's still not working.

How can I get my browsers to view QT movies again?

You could try reinstalling QuickTime or show us what registry change was denied:

• Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > Resident > page (scroll) to the bottom of the listing and highlight a portion of the log that shows the denied change, then right click and select Copy. Paste (Ctrl+V) the log entry to another post in this thread

TeaTimer's missing buttons:

There is currently a bug in TeaTimer 1.4. Portions of TeaTimer's popup dialog overlay the "Allow change" and "Deny change" buttons. On my system the very top edges of the "Allow change" button (on the left) and "Deny change" button (on the right) are showing and I am still able to select the options. I also can check "Remember this decision" since it is visible. If no portion of the "Allow change" and "Deny change" buttons are showing, you can answer TeaTimer's popup dialog (English language version) by pressing "A" on your keyboard for "Allow change" or "D" for "Deny change". Note: If you close the dialog without answering "Allow change" or "Deny change" the registry change is denied.

If you can't deal with the problem that way until it is fixed, you can:

1. Apply one of the workarounds found in the following pinned (Sticky) thread that fixes the pop-up dialog so the buttons are visible:

2. Disable TeaTimer as follows:
   • Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > Resident.
   • Uncheck the following:
     • Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) Active.
   
   
   
3. There is also a beta test version of TeaTimer available that overcomes this problem. To download the ßTeaTimer 1.5:
   
   • Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced mode > Settings > Settings.
   • Page down the option tree until you see a section titled "Web update" (just past half way down).
   • In the "Web update" section check the following option:
     
     • Display available beta versions.
   • Click Spybot-S&D (left pane).
   • Click Search for Updates (right pane).
   • When the list of available updates appears, check the following item:
     
     • ßTeaTimer 1.5 - !Resident protection update (798 KB) - 2007-01-05
   • Click Download Updates.

    Note# 1: To the right of the Target File (TeaTimer.exe) there is a button that looks like "[ . . . ]". Click on that button, navigate to the correct folder, click "Open" and then "Start".

Ok, I fixed it. Here's how:

Disable TeaTimer and SDHelper.

Quit out of S&D.

Kill the qttask.exe process from TaskManager.

Remove QuickTime from Add and Remove Programs.

Remove S&D using the Uninstall.exe app in the S&D program directory.

Reboot.

Go to http://www.pctools.com and purchase Registry Mechanic for 30 bucks.

Run Registry Mechanic to remove all the stuff S&D either can't or won't remove from your registry (there's a lot of it).

Go to the Program Files directory and manually delete the rest.

Open IE and reset your security policies to allow movies to play without interruption.

Go to Apple.com and download QuickTime 7.

Install QT7 and make sure the MIME types are correct.

Reboot.

Total time fixing what I shouldn't have had to fix in the first place: 1.5 hrs.
Total cost: $29.99

Unsolicited advice: DO NOT use TeaTimer--ever.

Man, some people work awfully hard to do the obvious. Simply turning off or removing TeaTimer and reinstalling QuickTime would have been sufficient, if even that was necessary.

I've never been able to stop that QuickTime crap from adding its startup entry, so that couldn't have been your problem though it might have been something else in QuickTime that you denied with TeaTimer.

And you are correct, no one should install the existing 1.4 version of TeaTimer ever again since the 1.5 beta version operates much better. I can't understand why two weeks before releasing a new TeaTimer version it was decided to finally force the two year old 1.4 update that includes the broken TeaTimer.

I tried the simpleton fixes that you suggested to no avail.

It's a registry entry that disables the QT plug-in--which and where, I have no idea, but I do know that simply reinstalling QT and disabling TT does not work.
