Default IE 7 closes after running Vundofix

I have read "Before you Post" and followed the directions.

A few days ago, my laptop began showing pop ups everywhere, and a process called "clcr.exe" showed up in Task Manager using lots a the available process. I checked the web, and came upon PSkelly's 3-25-07 post in response to member "Ridiculous" which seemed to suggest that the laptop was infected with Vundo virus. So, we followed PSkelley's suggestions and downloaded "Vundofix.exe" from Atribune. Vundofix appeared to remove the Vundo virus. However, whenever we attempt to open IE 7, the "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" dialog box appears. If you click either "send report" or "don't send", IE 7 then shuts down. If you don't click either, you can still use IE 7 for a while (like I'm doing now).

We ran Vundo fix again, and lo and behold, it found a file called "windows/system32/ccc.dll." We clicked "delete" but Vundofix apparently failed to actually remove that file. So, we ran Vundofix 15 more times. Each time, it found the same file, said it would delete but didn't. That file "ccc.dll" does not show up in the system32 file if you look.

Just before posting this, we ran Spybot again (the 5th time) and it found all sorts of spyware it hadn't found before. We've run "Housecall", Norton AntiVirus (subscriber), A Squared and Spybot. It seems that everytime we try to use IE 7, it allows more spyware in. We've also run Spybot and Vundofix in safe mode.

We've downloaded HijackThis and run that program. The log file is saved but I'm not attaching it now per the "Before you post" directions. Please help, because we'd really like to avoid removing XP Home and reinstalling it. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, while I can't make any promises, some of these infections can be tough to remove. I will do my very best.
Post a fresh HJT log, you can hold all other reports or logs you have in the event I ask to see them. I will know more when I see the log. Since you seems to be sure it is Vundo, make sure to rename HJT.exe so any files that are hidden will be shown.

    Thanks...Phil

    Phil: Thanks.

Attached is a fresh hjt log. Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by naming hjt.exe.

Note: Yesterday we opened up system 32 in safe mode, clicked on view to see all files, and looked at every single file to see if we could find the system32\ccc.exe file that Atribune's VundoFix seems to find every time and manually remove it (at the sugggestion of our techy at work). We didn't find any such file.

However, in looking at start up in msconfig, there were three files checked with no lable or name. We unchecked them. One is now gone and the other two say "microsoft\windows\run". Anyway, beginning after taking those steps, and doing nothing else, IE 7 doesn't shut down automatically with the error message, but does open slowly.

Not sure if I will need it, but if you point your mouse at and file or folder and right click, one of the options you get is to rename. The hackers have written there junk to stay invisable to HJT, by renaming it, we can see their junk. Let's see what we have first
I would also prefer to work alone, if you have another tech advising you, let me know and I will get out of the way. From long experience I have found a car drives best with one driver...Thanks

I am looking at this log:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 8:04:28 PM, on 4/4/2007
Before we start, I suspect(may be wrong) that a 020 Winlogon file which is vundo may be hiding. We are going to remove a lot of junk, but before we start I want you to navigate to here:
C:\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe <<< point the mouse at HijackThis.exe and right click, then choose rename. Call it aguitarm.exe or whatever you wish. After a reboot, the next HJT log will show this:
C:\hijackthis\aguitarm.exe and if Vundo is hidden we should see it.

Please follow the directions carefully and in the posted order:

    1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

    2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    3) I am afraid the Guard feature in this program may block our changes, please turn it off. I you do not own it and are done with it, you may uninstall it. C:\Program Files\a-squared Anti-Malware\a2guard.exe

    4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkqozig.dll <<< delete that file

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hvqatnyi.dll <<< delete that file

    C:\Documents and Settings\Spongebob\Local Settings\Application Data\jdgcxqk.dll <<< delete that file

    6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

    7) I would like a look at your uninstall list like this:
    Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Restart the computer and post the uninstall list and a new HJT log. Add any comment you think will help.

    Thanks
