popups that bring viruses, any help?

few days ago i downloaded a file off the net, but when i clicked it, nothing happened and instead the file dissapeared. about 5 minutes later norton antivirus reported a virus of somekind. i ran the antivirus scan, and it found nothing after that. i ran adaware and it just found the usual cookies and whatnot. when i ran spybot, it found a "smitfraud c toolbar888" or something like that. i tried getting rid of it but everytime i scan again, it always shows up.

so now every once in a while a popup will open itself, often with my norton telling me it detected a virus. also, anytime i rightclick, it now takes around 10 full seconds for the menu to appear. only started happening when all this crap started up as well.

so it now seems theres not much i can do. my up-to-date norton antivirus is pure crap. it never finds anything, only informs me that my collection of viruses are growing. the "highly recommended" spyware adware etc programs everyone swears by, doesnt help me.

anything i can do to save my computer?
