    Talking followup scans-superantispyware etc

    Hi,
After following your instructions and running superantispyware and HJT I opened my internet connection and tried to connect to the google site. It still seemed to take too long to connect, there is a hesitation before connection. I then ran HJT and copied the log. I then ran spybot and it again came up with "rootkit.dayoff.process". I exported the log file of that scan then fixed the problem. I then ran another HJT scan. I am attempting to include all the scans here for you even though you didn't ask for the spybot scan result. but the problem does seem to appear when connecting to sites through IE. The comp is much quicker to respond to commands now though. What do you think about spybot finding it again!? Here they are...

    Hi,

Thanks for posting the Spybot log, it shed me some light!

I actually expected something like this to come out in the gmer log, not sure why it didn't..

    Download combofix.exe

    1. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    Talking combo fix HJT result

    Hi, and thanks again...
D/l combofix and started the scan. It instructed to enter 1 to scan which I did, but nothing happened so I clicked "enter" on keyboard which started the scan. I immediately got an avast warning "trojan horse found", "c\combofix\cfiles.dat" named "win32:Dadobra.EY(TRJ)", I clicked "do nothing" and the scan continued for a few seconds when it happened again. I responded the same way and it happened one more time then the scan proceeded to completion. After reboot I connected to the internet and doubledclicked on my desktop google homepage shortcut. After waiting for nearly 2 minutes nothing happened then the windows "busy" icon appeared, then about 1 minute later a window appeared saying "windows cannot find http:www.google.ca/webhp?sourceid=UTF8'." I tried again and the exact same thing happened with no connection, only windows busy icon then windows message. I gave up on that and ran HJT. Moments after choosing "select all" on tdhe HJT scanlog, 2 IE windows appeared...I assume from my 2 attempts at connecting to google homepage. could it be that something was running in the bkgd which prevented connection to IE/google then when the mystery process finished windows tried to complete my 2 connection attempts to google? Wait...I'm going to try something which seems to work when this has been happening recently.........Yes!..., I just used "internet options" to clear history, temporary files, cookies etc, and then clicked on the desktop google link and it connected immediately!! I don't know if it means anything but this procedure has worked often since this issue has been plagueing me. Any way, following is the Combofix and HJT logs. I think I should also mention that on the day before I first noticed this problem (rootkit.dayoff.process) or whatever it turns out to be, I had visited the microsoft update website and performed the recommended updates, then a couple of office 2000 updates, then a noncritical update, ... the thought did cross my mind originally that that was the source of my problem....that is until I scanned with spybot and it found the "rootkit.dayoff.process" . thanks for your continuing help.

    Hi,

D/l combofix and started the scan. It instructed to enter 1 to scan which I did, but nothing happened so I clicked "enter" on keyboard which started the scan. I immediately got an avast warning "trojan horse found", "c\combofix\cfiles.dat" named "win32:Dadobra.EY(TRJ)", I clicked "do nothing" and the scan continued for a few seconds when it happened again. I responded the same way and it happened one more time then the scan proceeded to completion.
Don't worry about that. It's avast!'s false positive.

Sometimes, a corrupt IE cache causes problems with it.

It's also not likely that the rootkit came from Microsoft.

*two optionals that I would recommend be uninstalled.

    LimeWire
    Winmx

Even when programs like these are not infected themselves, they will still bring malware into your system because more than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. I recommend that you remove this program from your system.

*Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the items I listed in bold if found.

Delete the following folders if you uninstalled their corresponding programs:

    C:\Program Files\Winmx

    Talking rootkit.dayoff.process con't

Hi, I tried limewire several months ago but preferred Winmx so uninstalled Limewire at that time. If there are still traces let me know how to remove them. lt doesn't appear in "add remove progs". Even thought wmx is still installed it doesn't appear on the add remove list either. About a month ago a vscan I was running found a virus in the uninstall folder of wmx and the problem was fixed, but now the uninstall folder for wmx is no longer there and as noted above the listing for wmx doesn't appear in my "add remove programs" list, so how can I uninstall it. Can I do it manually item by item?
I did remove Limewire file from C:\Documents and Settings\Alan\Application Data\LimeWire.

I'm not sure if i understand your instuction ... click start > run > copy and paste: reg delete "HKLM\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\WindowsUpdate" /f. Did you mean to say I should click start then run then copy and paste "HKLM\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\WindowsUpdate" into the run window then click OK? If so, i get the message saying "windows cannot find..." the file. Then I tried the instruction differently by copying the whole line...reg delete "HKLM\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\WindowsUpdate" /f as it appears in your post and when i clicked "OK" no message appeared stating "windows can't find the file", so maybe that means it worked that way.

One other change i made after your post was to use the spybot>system tools>startup... I saw 5 items with similar names which the info pane tells me are associated with malware. (partial name under "value" is CTFMON.EXE) I removed checkmark for the 5 entries.
FOLLOWING IS AN NEW HJT SCANLOG...THANKS AGAIN.

What you did was right. You should've pasted the whole thing.

Ctfmon.exe is not malware. Check this: http://www.liutilities.com/products/...ibrary/ctfmon/

    Hi,

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
    First step:
    • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
    • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
    • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
    • Open Spybot S&D
    • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
    • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
    • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
    • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
    • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
    • OK any prompts.
    • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
    • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Open HijackThis > choose Scan Only > Place a checkmark in the boxes beside these entries in bold.

Your Java is out of date....
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
    • Click Start > Control Panel
    • Click Add/Remove Programs
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download Java Runtime Environment 6u3, and install it to your computer.

    Post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Default rootkit.dayoff.process con't

    Hi again!
Performed new security update from windows. Reactivated (replaced check mark in start up) in 3 items named CTFMON.EXE and one named ctfmon.exe as you suggested even though the indication from the spybot startup listing indicated they were malware. Uninstalled all versions of Java then installed the new version from their website. When I rebooted and clicked on the link to this forum (in my microsoft outlook email programme) I got a window titled "locate link in browser". I repeated this 3 times and on the 3rd try it did connect. This often happens when i startup or reboot...the program seems to go unresponsive for a while then finally does connect. I've left teatimer inactive. Here's the new log. dated 10.10 07.
