    hi mettaiyo,

dont see anything that looks like malware in the hjt log.
lets see if a online scan can dig anything up:

    F-secure scan:
    http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml

    uses Internet Explorer only

click on the "start scanning button" near bottom of page.
click to accept/install the ActiveX applet
"accept" the License Agreement, click "full system scan"
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.Download may take awhile
The scan will take some time to finish.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.

Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a current HijackThis log.

    look what i found:

    or

Google Search didn't redirect me to Baidu, but both MSN Search and Yahoo! Search did. But, today they don't. Maybe I did something that fixed it. I used something called "FIXWAREOUT" late in the night. If I did fix it, I'll remove previous System Restore Points, and create a new one. However, the F-Scan says 3 items were "Skipped" items and that there are 6 "Spyware" items, so I'm not sure.

I'm in western China, Sichuan Province. There are so many "oddities" in China, as you may know.

Lastly, my computer seems to be running slow. Can you give me any advice to speed it up?

Thank you again for your reply and your help, Shelflife!

    Default Search Redirect

Thank you, Shelflife. I appreciate your help. Even if there wasn't anything wrong, at least I know that now.

But, I'd still like to know how traffic can be redirected on purpose. And, is Baidu doing that, or is it the Chinese Government?

    Regards,

    Mettaiyo

    hi mettaiyo,

every packet that leaves your computer goes thru your ISP before its sent out to a major trunk line of the internet. My conception of China is that the internet is tightly controlled by the government. the internet is a information highway, cant have anybody getting any "bad or different ideas".

it would be very easy to control internet traffic at the ISP level, where you can go, what search engine to use, block websites, screen traffic, emails, chat programs etc. you have no doubt heard "big brother is watching you" well he is and its not just in China either.
this is old, but probably still applies:

    Default Search Redirect

    Hello Shelflife,

Thanks for your reply, and also for the useful information.

    I could get to the:

    http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/filtering/china/

    page, but the:

    http://web.amnesty.org/library/index/engasa170072002

    page is blocked.

My next question is "Why does any country in the world have anything at all to do with China?"

We are selling our souls to this evil country, China, in fact propping them up, for a few bucks!

Best wishes to you, Shelflife! Hope you're well, and in a good place!

    hi mettaiyo,

amnesty international pages must be "blocked"

    try this one:
    http://www.hrw.org/campaigns/china/b...censorship.htm
    or:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jingjing_and_Chacha

Why does any country in the world have anything at all to do with China
    one word: money.

    best wishes to you also.
