    Default Help with Virtumonde Please

    Hi,

I ran Spybot S&D and it found virtumonde on my computer, which I understand is responsible for a heap of popups i'm getting advertising fake anti-virus warnings along with a toolbar in IE.

I have read a few posts on this virtumonde, and have downloaded VundoFix V6.5.11 and run the program, which found a file. Before I run the fix I wanted to check I'm doing the right thing.

I downloaded HijackThis and this is the Log file:

What do I do now? Do I use Vundo to fix - sorry if this is a really dumb question, I just did not want to mess the computer up any more with an amateur fix.

Additional Info: A while ago I installed a new version of Norton (from legit CD) which then said the current version needed to be removed before the new version could be installed - since then neither version opens when clicked on. It does a scan each week but I do not seem able to download any updates. I don't know if this will make things hard. Sorry.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

First I suggest you take up the Symantec issue with their Technical Support and do it right away also. I don't use Symantec and would only be guessing. They will prbably remove it completely and reinstall it?
    http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoff...port/index.jsp

Vundo can be tough to remove, the hackers keep changing how they install to confuse us. Here is some information before we start.
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:
    http://www.networkworld.com/news/200...-unravels.html
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog
    http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks...q=winfixer+msn

I need to suggest it looks like you missed the information I posted above and that is pinned to the top of this forum. Read those instructions so you will know what is expected and please wait until I ask you to run and post the Kaspersky scan results.

Let's start like this and see what happens, seems no two removals wind up the same?

(sounds like you have the program so take what you need from the instructions)

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

    1) Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
    • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

    2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

    3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...ch/search.html

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [c8039345] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\jcqmaebu.dll",b

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\jcqmaebu.dll <<< delete that file

(If that file gives you trouble, use this tool and instructions)
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...42.html#delreb

    6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the Vundofix report, a new HJT log and some feedback.

    Thanks...Phil

Always complete all steps posted before you post the logs. Why else do you think I number them and ask for the logs at the end. Please make me aware of any steps you have not completed.

    Thanks

Sorry - I thought the rest of the steps were only if Vundo did not work... here goes step by step:

    Step 1.

I rescanned with Vundo, it did not find anything so the original log when I removed

    it is:

    VundoFix V6.5.11

    Checking Java version...

    Java version is 1.4.2.4
Old versions of java are exploitable and should be removed.

Scan started at 9:50:50 PM 11/7/2007

    Listing files found while scanning....

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ejadcqah.dll

    VundoFix V6.5.11

    Checking Java version...

    Java version is 1.4.2.4
Old versions of java are exploitable and should be removed.

Scan started at 11:09:07 PM 11/8/2007

    Listing files found while scanning....

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ejadcqah.dll

    Beginning removal...

    Attempting to delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\ejadcqah.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ejadcqah.dll Has been deleted!

    Performing Repairs to the registry.
    Done!

The First HJT Log after running Vundo is:

    Step 6:

    Ran ATF Cleaner.

I've run all these, when I restart I got a message from symantec saying I have:

    Event: Threat Found!
    Threat: Trojan.Awax
    File: C:\\system32\gebcbxu.dll

Should I use the program suggested to remove C:\WINDOWS\system32\jcqmaebu.dll to remove this program?

Steve, because you are not following the directions, you are making this harder than it should be and removing Vundo is hard enough!
I am posting the directions again for you:
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
Read and follow them please, this one in particular right now:
Note: In notepad under Format, uncheck "Word Wrap" Produce all HJT logs like this, single spaced.
single-spaced - (of type or print) not having a blank space between lines.

Post a new HJT log according to those instructions.
