    Default zlob.dnschanger infection

    Hello! My internet connection consists of my laptop connected directly to the modem provided by Rogers (cable internet). A few days ago, I've noticed that my internet connection would continuously drop and immediately reconnect, thus effectively stopping me from accessing the internet at all. I am typing this from my desktop, which was disconnected from my home network prior to my laptop infection (my router was malfunctioning so I've had to take apart my LAN).

    That being said, I could not scan with Kaspersky, so you'll have to put up with only the hijackthis log...

    Before I found this site I attempted to fix the problem myself. Here's what I did:
    - Spybot S&D --> found zlob.dnschanger
    -> fix problems -> restart
    - scan again, zlob still there
    - smitfraud fix - 1->2->5
    - fixwareout
    - various tcpip configs, ipconfig /flushdns, to no avail
    - Spybot S&D in safe mode -> no infection found, but connection problem still persists

    Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
    "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
    All advice given is taken at your own risk.
    Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

    Without seeing the results of the scans you say you ran, I have no way of knowing what you have done or not. Fixwareout produces report, post the report.txt in your next post. If you do not have it, delete any copy of Fixwareout on the computer and do this:

    Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

    Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
    http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...Fixwareout.exe

    Save it to your Desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
    The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
    You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
    Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
    Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

    (wait until you finish to post reports and logs)

    2) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

    Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

    Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

    Post the report from Fixwareout, the log from combofix and a new HJT log.

    Thanks

    Hi, thanks for replying!
    I've downloaded a fresh fixwareout and ran it, followed by combofix and finally a hijackthis scan, I hope I followed the instructions correctly.

    Thanks, looks like Fixwareout alreaady removed that hacker but combofix did not remove an item I though it would. It did however, show a few leftover Vundo files. Let's try to do the rest manually and see what happens.

    1) How to make files and folders visible:
    Click Start > Open My Computer.
    Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
    Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
    Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
    You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

    2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
    Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [{320D180E-06C1-1033-0727-050331200002}] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\{320D180E-06C1-1033-0727-050331200002}\Update.exe" mc-110-12-0000272
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{928FDFEC-39CA-48F8-AD6C-A639C38920C0}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 207.68.160.190 194.25.2.129 208.67.222.222 207.68.160.190 194.25.2.129 208.67.222.222
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 207.68.160.190 194.25.2.129 208.67.222.222 207.68.160.190 194.25.2.129 208.67.222.222

    Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    4) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{320D180E-06C1-1033-0727-050331200002}\Update.exe <<< delete that file

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfhkj.bak2 <<< delete that file
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfhkj.ini2 <<< delete that file
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfhkj.bak1 <<< delete that file

    5) Run ATF Cleaner
    Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

    Restart and post a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running.

    Thanks

    Thank you for the quick response! I have used HJT to fix the 4 entries you have specified and have set up my windows explorer to show hidden files.

    I have deleted the 3 files located under the "system32" folder and used ATF to clean up, then restarted my computer.

    I could not locate
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{320D180E-06C1-1033-0727-050331200002}\Update.exe

    There is no such folder under "Common Files". I used the "search" function to search for "update.exe" under the whole C drive but did not find any matches under the Common Files folder.

    There were 123 matches for "update.exe" (from the search) but only one was an exact match (upper case "U"). It is "Update.exe" under C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy.

    After taking the HJT scan, I attempted to connect to the internet, but the original problem persists (i.e. constant dropping/reconnecting).

    Here is the HJT log taken immediately after I have restarted my computer:

    Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, that's a clean HJT log.
    After taking the HJT scan, I attempted to connect to the internet, but the original problem persists (i.e. constant dropping/reconnecting).
    Make sure you are connecting to your ISP without the router. If you still have issues, get your ISP tech support involved. Make sure they know about the DNS hijacker so they can check all setting.

    Let's give Kaspersky another try in case there is hidden malware, use these instructions.

    Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
    Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

    Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

    You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

    * The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    * Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    * Now click on Scan Settings
    * In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    * Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    * Standard
    * Scan Options:
    * Scan Archives
    * Scan Mail Bases
    * Click OK
    * Now under select a target to scan:
    * Select My Computer
    * This will program will start and scan your system.
    * The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    * Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    * Now click on the Save as Text button:
    * Save the file to your desktop.

    Then post it here.

    Thanks

    I'm afraid it's still quite impossible to keep my internet connection up for more than 2 seconds on my laptop. I don't think any form of online scanning is possible for me right now.

    My router broke quite a few days ago, and I've been connecting to the internet via my modem alone with no problems on my desktop (from which I am sending this message). However, when I take the same ethernet cable and connect it to my laptop, I get the afore-mentioned problem. So I'm not sure how big a part my ISP plays in this, but if it comes down to it, I'll gladly give tech support a call.

    I have also cleared all quarantined files from Spybot and Ad-Aware, and it didn't seem to do any good.

    Thanks for the feedback, I see nothing in the HJT log but it can not see everything which is why I am trying to run a scan. What happens when you run a system scan with Symantec. It is near impossible for me to troubleshooting without an interent connection. You can try a couple of things:

    I believe you can download this to a floppy or CD.
    1) http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm

    2) Lets check some settings on your system:
    Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
    Then right click on your Default Connection
    Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL, or AOL Connection.
    Left click on Properties
    Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
    Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
    Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen
    Restart the computer
    Go to Start->Run->Type CMD and click Ok. The MSDOS Window will be displayed. At the command prompt, type the following and press Enter after each line:

    ipconfig /flushdns (The space between g and / is needed)
    regsvr32 netshell.dll
    regsvr32 netcfgx.dll
    regsvr32 netman.dll
    Exit

    Restart the computer.

    3) Don't know if this will help, but you can look at it:

    Thank you for the help. Unfortunately I'm stuck at school all day today. When I get home I will take a look at the links you have posted and I'll post any findings tomorrow.

    Hi, sorry for the late reply. The problem seems to have been fixed by winsockxpfix. I ran the program on my laptop and after restart I could connect to the internet normally. I took the chance to install zone alarm firewall and update all my anti-virus/spyware software.

    Thank you so much for helping me over the past couple of days, you guys are awesome! What would I ever do without the help of friendly strangers over the internet? xD

    My laptop seems to be symptom-free as far as I can tell, is there anything else I can do?

    Thank you again, and awaiting further instructions.
