Default SDHelper IE7 Add-on does not work in 1.5.2

IE7 Add-on SDHelper does not work in the new SpybotSD v1.5.2.20 for my XP SP2 Pro system. I have enabled it, immunized several times, it appears in IE, but no luck.

SDHELPER.DLL is version 1.5.0.11 but when I use the .DLL version 1.5.0.8 from the SpybotSD v1.5.1.15 installation, it works.

Any suggestions? BTW, program load time is greatly improved. Thanks.

What test could I apply to see whether it is working in my XP SP2 installation?

Default SDHelper v1.5.0.8 works v1.5.0.11 does not

To see the SDHelper.DLL v1.5.0.8 works, do the following:

    1. In SpybotSD, enable SDHelper and immunize
    2. Open IE, click TOOLS, select Spybot – S&D Configuration, in pull-down menu, select “Display Dialog when blocking” and click OK.
    3. Visit a site such as www.msnbc.com, randomly select a news story (it happens on most but not all), a popup message appears such as:
Spybot – S&D Bad URL Blocker
Spybot-S&D IE Helper has detected an URL known as malicious resource
    URL: http://view.atdmt.com/iview/msnnkhac0013 ...
    Or
    URL: http://ad.doubleclock.net/adi/n1942.msn.com
    Click on DENY to proceed.

Also, in step #2 above when using the new SDHelper.DLL v1.5.0.11, in the Spybot – S&D Configuration window, the dialog window will not close if you click on X in the upper right hand corner of the window. If you click OK in the bottom, it works. In the older SDHelper.DLL v1.5.0.8 version, this does not occur and the window closes as expected when you click on the X.

    Thank you for any help.

a simple way to see if the SDHelper was loaded with the Internet Explorer is to start the IE and to check the add-ons in the tools section of the IE.
If the SDHelper is loaded there should also be a configuration menu within the IE tools.

Please note that the 64bit IE is currently not supported, only 32bit IE support is currently available.

Thank you for the test description - I did exactly what you said, randomly selected over 10 news stories and exactly nothing happened in so far as blocking is concerned. The dialogue box can be accessed from IE tools menu, and the display dialogue when blocking set, but the stats on all items remain as zero. I also confirm the dialogue box can not be closed by clicking on the X.

Try this URL (obtained from my SDHelper.log for something actually being blocked):

If the SDHelper dialog is designed like the TeaTimer 1.5 dialog, the reason the dialog can not be closed with the "X" is so you must make a decision.

Thank you - it did block correctly and updated the Blacklisted Sites & Files stats from 0 to 1. Was a good confidence boost.

MD...I clicked on your test link...a new browser window opened and it said "connecting" on the tab and did nothing else...I received no messages or anything. Is this normal?

That is exactly what should happen if you have SDHelper set to "Block all pages silently". The URL was blocked. If you look in the SDHelper.log (see Note #1) you would see that it was blocked.

Although that URL will not display correctly, to test the functionality of SDHelper:
    • Go into Internet Explorer.
    • In the Tools menu select "Spybot – Search Destroy Configuration".
    • Then in the "Spybot-S&D - Configuration" window in the "Settings" tab under "When encountering bad things" you can select among:
      • Block all pages silently
      • Display dialog when blocking
      • Ask for blocking confirmation
    • If you select either of the following options rather than "Block all pages silently" you will get a dialog when SDhelper is blocking things:
      • Display dialog when blocking
      • Ask for blocking confirmation
    • The "Display dialog when blocking" is only a notification dialog. The "Ask for blocking confirmation" gives you the option to "Allow" or "Deny" the access.

    _______________

Note #1: There a couple of ways to access the "SDHelper.log":
    1. Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced mode > Tools > View Reports > View Previous reports. Select the "SDHelper.log" file and open it.
    2. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the SDHelper.log file located in one of the following directories:
      • Windows 95 or 98:
        C:\Windows\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs
      • Windows ME:
        C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs
      • Windows NT, 2000 or XP:
        C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs
      • Windows Vista:
        C:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs

Double click on SDHelper.log file and it should open with Notepad.

Getting an answer is one thing, learning is another.
