    Default "malwarebell" removal

I have contracted this rogue malware called "malwarebell". Somehow it got through my antivirus program and 3 spyware programs. I've seen similar descriptions in posts on this forum discribing SYSTEM ERROR messages that warn of virus infection and need to download antivirus software to eliminate the problem. Clicking OK on this message brings up a download from "malwarebellagreement.com". After running the scan software you're informed to rid yourself of the virus it will cost you $40. Info on the web says this software further infects your computer and removes nothing but $40 from your pocket. I've contacted the FCC with a formal complaint but that could take years. How do I get rid of it. I done a file search and removed all traces and cleaned the registry without results. I've run mulitple Norton scans and updated system security scans as well as Spybot, AdWare, and Adware Doctor without results. A free scan with Enigma Software shows the infections but they want $30 every six months for the service of removing and keeping it away. Sounds fishy. Ideas?

    Hi

Let's see your HijackThis log first

    Download and install TrendMicro HijackThis
    * Once installed open HijackThis by clicking Start > Programs > HijackThis and click the button labeled
    Do a system scan only

    * Click the scan button in the lower left hand corner of the interface and HijackThis will quickly scan your system.
    * Once the scan is complete the scan button will now read save log. Click this button to save the log file to your PC. Once you select where you would like to save the file it will open in your systems default text editor. Typically this application is Notepad. Post the log here.

    Hi again

    Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
    • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
    • If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
      select
      Advanced Mode
    • On the left hand side, click on Tools
    • Then click on the Resident icon in the list
    • Uncheck
      Resident TeaTimer
      and OK any prompts.
    • Restart your computer

    1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here

    Default Combofix problems

Downloaded Combofix to desktop and tried to run. Every spyware program I had went nuts with Trojan alerts. What's up? Even Norton antivirus went into alarm.

    Default Combofix problems

Okay my bad I did not read the Combofix site's instructions first. Like turn off all anti-everything software. But why the Trojan alerts with this software?

Because CF uses same kind of techniques that's why. Of course CF uses those in a good way. If you still don't trust it then you can alternatively follow this quite straightforward set of instructions.

    Default My sincere appreciation!!

The Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware does look a lot more user friendly. Even if this doesn't work let me extend my sincere appreciation for your help thus far. I know a far amount about computers but have always been a little shy about digging into the guts of it so your help is really welcome. Oldmedic

    Default It worked by golly!

Well Blade81 is worked. Malwarebytes' program loaded easily and completed scan within 10 minutes. Found the "malwarebell" entries and removed them. Will let you know later if this completely resolved the problem. Again my sincere thanks. Oldmedic
