Zlob.DNSChanger infection.

Hi Guys,

I've been trying to get rid of a Zlob infection, but it's clearly beyond my competence, and I would be most grateful for some help with it.
Spybot has detected it this morning, although the past few days it didn't find it, even though I know it was there.

I run Norton, Spywareblaster, Spybot S&D, Winpatrol, Windows Defender, AdAware and Spywareblaster. I've also tried Kaspersky and Malwarebytes this week. The latter found nothing, but Kaspersky did find a backdoor trojan in a folder which I then shredded with Spybot.

I seem to be bogged down with anti-malware but still getting infected; your suggestions are welcome as to the best current defense.

The last one was tough to clear, let's how this one is easier. You should keep this computer offline until you are clean to deny them access.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your protection back on when you finish.

3) Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

Save it to yourDesktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

Thank you for your assistance.
It was slightly problematic in that I could not get a connection after performing the tasks. I replaced the S&D hosts file, and then ran dnsbak.reg, and eventually had to reboot to get a connection.
I also noted that Norton's auto-update had been switched off, this has now been restored.
Spysweeper is also unable to check for updates, as is Windows Defender.

It was slightly problematic in that I could not get a connection after performing the tasks. I replaced the S&D hosts file, and then ran dnsbak.reg, and eventually had to reboot to get a connection.

Thaks for that feedback, please be aware that the only tool we used, Fixwareout has been used uncountable numbers of times to remove this infection, but stuff does happen. This is why I posted a link to the instructions and asked you to read them.

That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.There is always risk involved in installing and removing any software. Even a fix that time has shown to be useful to thousands of users, can present problems to a few or be found to have a bug in development.

As hard as I try, I can not guarantee that problems can not occur. If you have any issues with this, we really should not proceed beyond this point.

I have no problem at all with accepting any and all associated risks.

It may have just been a coincidence, with extra saturday night usage on the servers meaning no bandwith for me to log on (I'm way out in the coutryside), but I thought I should mention everything of potential importance that happens during the process.

I fully appreciate that the offending files are deep within the system and delving there can be risky.
The alternative is considerably less attractive.

Thanks for that feedback Matt, here is another members topic and you can see the changes we went through to clean the junk from their computer. Notice that the stuff removed with the tool then came back. Often the help of technical folks at the ISP is need to repair settings changed by the malware that our tools can not always fix. If you read the links I posted, you know the kind of scum we are dealing with.

Hi Phil,

The Malwarebytes scan was clean, but I know there's something still here, ironically because of a typo in the first link of your last post.
The missing dot between forums and spybot meant the link did not exist, but rather than the standard error page, I was redirected to a hijackers search page. I quickly disconnected and closed the window.
I've read the thread you linked to now, and can see the problems faced. Given the negative scan, where next?

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. At least you know what we are up against, and these are not nice folks. I am not seeing anything that looks like this infection in the HJT log. I don't recognize some of your 016-DPF's, would you look at each one and be sure you do.
Understand these hackers have been showing a difference Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) than this one: 85.255.113.90 because we recognize it as coming from the Ukraine. The hackers are now showing the number again so they have done something to make it harder to remove them. The creator of the tool (Fixwareout) will respond to this but it takes time.

Let's run a couple of tools looking for information. Don't do anything with the information, just post it.

1) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

2) Please download F-Secure Blacklight:
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
and save to your C:\ drive.
Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
Copy/paste or type the following in the command window: C:\fsbl.exe /expert
Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
Click "Scan".
After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit".
BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet!
I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe" and "tcptest.exe.
Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

3) I also strongly suggest you get with tech support at your ISP and explain exactly what has happened. They will be able to reset your computer to the correct information. I can post manual instructions for doing so, as you read in the member link, but hesitate because the possible setting vary from ISP to ISP.

I have followed your instructions. The 016's all seem ok, I'm a photographer, and the uploaders you see are for legitimate sites I recognise.
Both of the scans were clear, logs posted below.
I followed the manual DNS resetting instructions, and found the sites had been changed to the dodgy IP addresses, now set to obtain automatically. I will contact my ISP in the morning anyway.

My concerns are: When I shut down lastnight windows came up with a security message about closing a window to protect my system, I then had to instruct it to shut down again.
Also, then and again just now, a "Microsoft Error Reporting" message appeared that I have never seen before about reporting recent errors, and it doesn't feel right to me. I have posted a photograph of it for you http://www.nature-photos.biz/dodgy.htm - look at the spelling of the word signature - I'm not sure microsoft would spell it "signeture".
I'll try and leave it untouched until I hear from you.
