    Default Virtumondo, possibly others?

    Hi!

I considered myself to be rather wellprotected, and after yesterday naivley thought to have myself rid of my Virtumondo problem, seems i was rather wrong... I have been using NOD32 for the last 6 months, Firefox the last year and a half and installed SpyBot only recently, but I still won't get rid of it entirely. Popups with "Microsoft-look-a-like icons" advertising Antivirus 2009 keep showing uip as well as other ads.

Here is my HJT log to get things started:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.
I considered myself to be rather wellprotected
Vundo exploits out of date programs to infect you. In a glance I can see out of date Internet Explorer, Java, and Adobe Reader?

    1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
    * Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
    * If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
    * On the left hand side, Click on Tools
    * Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
    * Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
    * Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

    2) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks for returning your information, proceed carefully and in the numbered order.

    1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\ <<< Java is out of date, see this information:
    http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...80&postcount=2

    2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
    http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
    Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

    3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    4) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

    Code:
    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
    "AppInit_DLLs"=-
    Save this as CFScript

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

    5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

(if you are positive this is safe you may leave it)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://go.purenetworks.com/redir/cli...&lcid=1033&am= (obfuscated)

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: kctxuc.dll unxezq.dll wpbmoq.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
    http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...efetch-XP.html

    7) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
    http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
    * Please post contents of CFScript, the MBAM log and a new HJT log.

How is the computer running now?

    Thanks

Running better already with the first ComboFix done, though i am a little concerned about it all returning, especially when MBAM found even more of them... Also during the scan with MBAM, NOD 32 reacted and quarantined a file, just thought it might be worth mentioning...

Thanks Daniel, for returning your information, no need to be concerned with what MBAM found, those are in combofix quarantine and infected System Restore files. We will address those now.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

    Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

    Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Reboot

    Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run MBAM again to make sure we got it all, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update NOD32 Antivirus and scan your system to make sure it is running as it should and scanning clean.

I'll post this information for you now so you can benefit from it.

Huge thanks for all this great help. Feels good to be clean again. I'm in the middle of the final scan now, and will post again if anything virtumunde-related shows up, but I doubt it. Those links seems great, will certainly ask the ppl using this computer (parents and 2 sisters) to read them, but in your honest opinion, how many security related software do you really think is required to stay somewhat safe from attacks like these? Imo, i will probably uninstall HJT and mbam now, spybot im not sure of, but i guess it won't hurt to keep, as long as it does not conflict with NOD 32, since it seems superior in detecting spyware. The firewall running as of now they are using the one built into windows (even tho i know it's not super) and browser is Firefox to 99%.

My main point would be, was this attack a fluke because JRE was out of date or is the amount of protection insufficient?

Huge thanks again to you and all of you who are helping out like this. You are really appreciated in this hostile jungle of malware and scams.

Malware is epidemic now, it is very difficult not to get infected even when you do everything right, we are dealling with organized crime, here is just a glimpse.

Read the links I posted, those folks have forgotten more about security than I know.

Check your Adobe Reader, I may be wrong but I think I saw it was out of date in the combofix log:

    Here I go again... :p

The scans finished with clean results and i am updating my windows with SP3, in the middle of the installation i get several notifications by teatimer and spybot that indicates important registry changes, one of them "TSClientMISUninstaller" Terminal Service Client? During a Service Pack installation? Is this some kind of attack or did i just deny something crucial for the installation of SP3? In total I received 5 such warnings, 1 more with TSClient-stuff, 2 with that seemed to handle SP recovery or something similar, and the last one contained no data...

I have run Spybot for about ten years and I will probably get hollored at for saying this, but I do not enable TT prefering SpywareGuard instead. When you are downloading and installing an item like SP3, there are enough possible issues that can come up without TT constantly challenging the valid download. I would disable TT for the duration of that kind of installation. TT sees the changes and does not know if they are good or bad.

I will also point out I had issues on one computer and purchased the CD from Microsoft so I am not the one who can advise you with a SP installation beyond saying Microsoft has free support for any SP#3 issue:
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (All Languages)
