I tried doing this but when I drag and drop onto ComboFix, after the green bar has fully loaded, I get an error saying "Incompatible OS. ComboFix only works for Windows 2000 and XP". When I try running it in Safe Mode ComboFix does not run, I get an error saying that "c.bat is not a recognized internal or external file, program, or batch file".

Also, my AVG keeps alerting me to a virus called Win32/Virut, saying that it has been "Detected on open" for a variety of exe files.

I have tried this and I get the error "The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file". My Internet Explorer has the virus in its files so I have tried to run the site using Mozilla Firefox. I get this error for any file I have tried running.

So if AVG has reported Win32/Virut and you have that kind of symptoms, there isn't unfortunately much we can do.

Virut is a file infector which can/will infect all your .exe and .scr files. It will infect also program which attempts to remove it so even attempting to remove makes no sense. So you can only backup important files (not .exe and .scr files) and reformat/reinstall.

If you need help with that, I can provide you some links.

That's too bad that after all of this reformatting is the only option.

Anyway, I really appreciate all of your help and if you could please pass along some instrcutions on how to go about the reformat/reiinstall I would appreciate that.

    Regards.

Actually I was able to get ComboFix (which has a newer version, btw) to run in safemode but for some reason I cannot paste the results here (even on another pc).

    Same for HJT.

But I can paste the results from virusscan.jotti.org:

    A-Squared Found Trojan.Win32.Patched.ai!IK
    AntiVir Found W32/Virut.BL
    ArcaVir Found Trojan.Small.Fb
    Avast Found Win32:Virtob
    AVG Antivirus Found nothing
    BitDefender Found Win32.Virut.K
    ClamAV Found W32.Virut-27
    CPsecure Found nothing
    Dr.Web Found Win32.Virut.40
    F-Prot Antivirus Found W32/Patched.E.gen!Eldorado
    F-Secure Anti-Virus Found Virus.Win32.Virut.bq
    G DATA Found Win32:Virtob
    Ikarus Found Trojan.Win32.Patched.ai
    Kaspersky Anti-Virus Found Virus.Win32.Virut.bq
    NOD32 Found Win32/Virut.NBF
    Norman Virus Control Found W32/Virut.BN
    Panda Antivirus Found W32/Virutas.AX
    Sophos Antivirus Found W32/Virut-Gen

If I'm still looking at reformat/reinstall then so be it.

Thanks again Shaba- you've been tremendous.

    Regards.

Jotti results confirmed infection and reformatting is only option.

Here is a good tutorial for that.

Ok Shaba- all done now. The reformatting/reinstall was far less painful than I thought it wold be.

One lst item: when WXP boots up, I still have 2 choices- 1 for Windows Set Up and 1 for regular Windows.

I guess this is soome kond of holdover from the reinstall.

Any suggestions as to how I can get rid of the set up option?

Thanks again for all your help- you've really got me out of a bind here.

    Kindest regards.

    Go to start - run

Type notepad c:\boot.ini and click ok.

    Notepad will open.

Please post contents of that file here.
