    Unhappy Virtumonde Removal Help!

Whenever I run IE or Firefox, it's automatically re-directed to another site (usually some sort of advertisement) -- even if I go to Google or something and type in a search and click on a result. I'm fairly sure my computer has the Virtumonde virus, so hopefully someone can help me remove it. Here is my Hijack This log:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time.
I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do. The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

Let's find out what it is:

    1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
    * Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
    * If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
    * On the left hand side, Click on Tools
    * Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
    * Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
    * Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

    2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

    Tutorial
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

    Thanks

I disabled Tea Timer in SpyBot and restarted my computer, but now there's a new problem. The computer started to boot up, but then got to a black screen before the Windows XP login screen, and it just froze. I tried restarting the computer three times, but it constantly gets stuck at this point. So, I tried rebooting it in Safe Mode, and the same thing happens.

    Now what do I do?

I really don't know, I remove malware and this sounds like a hardware issue. Can you provide any error messages that might help me find answers. Do you have a Windows XP Operating System CD? If so, you may be able to boot from it or to Recovery Console. Provide more information.

This is some nasty adware and it does skrew up a computer

    Thanks

Okay, I got the computer to reboot, and I ran ComboFix and after that, ran HijackThis again. Here are the logs:

Thanks for returning your information, that's a nasty item you had on the computer besides the Vundo junk.

O4 - Global Startup: winsched.exe <<< I see this running, see what it is:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...&start=10&sa=N

Follow the directions carefullly and in the numbered order.

    1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\ <<< update Java, see this information:
    http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...80&postcount=2

    2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    3) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

    Code:
    Driver::
    TDSSserv

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\TDSSserv.sys

    Folder::
    C:\VundoFix Backups
    Save this as CFScript

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

    4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    O4 - Global Startup: winsched.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
    http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...efetch-XP.html

    6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
    http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
    * Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.

How is the computer running now?

    Thanks

So...does it look like everything's gone now?
It looks good to me but I am not in front of the computer which is why I ask this:
How is the computer running now?
    ComboFix 08-09-16.05 - Kris 2008-09-19 11:51:58.2

Just to be sure, please post a new HJT log run after combofix. I would also like a look at your uninstall list like this:

    Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

    Thanks

The computer seems to be running a lot faster, so hopefully this is a good sign! Here are the various logs you requested...

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues only.

https://psi.secunia.com/ <<< here is a small, free program that will watch for updates for you if you are interested. You can even turn it of in MSConfig and run it when you want to check.

Adobe Reader 7.0 <<< hackers are exploiting this program (and others) so keep it up to date.
    Adobe Reader 9.0
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

    See this information: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...80&postcount=2

Mozilla Firefox (1.5.0.12) <<< if you are going to use Firefox, you need to keep it up to date, the newest version is 3.0.1
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Spybot - Search & Destroy <<< not sure of the version
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 <<< out of date, uninstall
    Spybot-S&D 1.6 has arrived! 8. July 2008
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/news/2008-07-08.html

SoulSeek Client 156c <<< this is in violation to SaferNetworking's p2p policy:
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282
If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.
    Uninstall that program.

Viewpoint Media Player <<< Installed by aol probably without your knowledge. If you do not useit, uninstall it, information:
    http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/newslette....php#viewpoint
    http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

If this many major programs are out of date, others I don't know are going to be also. Either use the free tool or check and update all programs manually.

    Since you said this:
The computer seems to be running a lot faster, so hopefully this is a good sign!
As we move towards completion, this is the next important step:

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

    Thanks
