Default Can't Start Office 2007 Applications

    Hi --

I can't start any recently installed 2007 Applications and my computer has been very slow for the last month or so. Can I post a HJT log here and get a point of view on what could be causing the problem?

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Here is my HJT log.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

    See this information: http://www.systemlookup.com/CLSID/5702.html
    http://www.sophos.com/security/analy...trojbhodc.html

If you still need help, we will start like this, please read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

    1) C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< Java is VERY BADLY out of date and likely the readon for the infection, see this:
    http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...80&postcount=2
While this does not need to be done first, it needs to be done as quickly as possible. Since it can be difficult to remove these very old programs, this tool will help:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/JavaRa_d5967.html

    2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
    * Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
    * If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
    * On the left hand side, Click on Tools
    * Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
    * Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
    * Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

    2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
    http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...efetch-XP.html

    5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
    http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
    * Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

    6) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Tell me how the computer runs now.

    Thanks

Thanks again for all your help. The computer does seem somewhat faster, but still will not run Office '07 apps. I'll wait to hear what I need to do next.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, you said:

It is possible the programs will have to be reinstalled, I can not control damage that malware does to third party programs. We can see if System File Checker helps in case it is being caused by a corrupt or missing System file.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues only.

Dave, hackers have started exploiting programs we don't keep up to date, see this information.
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Reader 7.0 <<< out of date and being exploited
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/

My Way Search Assistant <<< adware, uninstall it.

    Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2.20 <<< uninstall

Viewpoint Media Player <<< if you do not use this, uninsall it
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

    http://www.spywareinfo.com/newslette....php#viewpoint
    http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

Windows Defender <<< unless I am missing something, I do not see this running? Windows Defender is a good, freeware program from Microsoft. If you are having a problem getting it to run, uninstall it and download it again from here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...r/default.mspx

Give System File Checker a run to see if it helps with the programs not working right:
    http://dwightblackburn.com/winxp/ <<< tutorial

Have a look at this information, most of it is directed at helping the computer to run faster and better.

    http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutori...ningslowly.php
    http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/m...wcomputer.html

How much RAM is install on the computer?
Right click MyComputer then click Properties. On the General tab in the lower right corner is the RAM, post that information.

Let me have some feedback when possible, don't go beyond a week without responding or the topic will get closed.

    Thanks...Phil

    Smile Office 2007 Now Running!

    Hi Phil --

I did everything I was able to do from your last post and the great news is my Office 2007 Apps are now running! Thank you very much -- I really appreciate your help.

    A few things:
    1. How often do you typically run PSI to check when programs need to be updated?

    2. I was unable to uninstall My Way Search Assistant -- it gave me an error message each time I tried. Any thoughts on this?

    3. I have 1.24 GB of RAM on this machine. It seems to be running plenty fast now, but if you think I should add more and it is possible to add more to an Inspiron 2200, I will.

Thanks again Phil -- really appreciate all you have done.

Good morning Dave, let's see if I can answer your questions first.

    1) I run PSI about twice a month, that should be plenty. I also keep an eye open here for various updates:
    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r212...ftware-Updates

    2) MyWaySA (Adware.MyWebSearch) <<< looks like MBAM remove the folders, but check to make sure all is gone:
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA <<< that folder should be gone.
Not a problem for you after that, but if you want it gone from Add Remove:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314481
I caution you to always make a backup before doing anything in your registry.

Go to Start » Run » type: regedit » OK.
    • On the leftside, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
    • Go up to File » Export
      • Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
        Under "Filename" put RegBackup.
    • Choose to save it to C:\
    • Click save and then go to File » Exit.

    3) That should be plenty of RAM.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed nothing, nmo need to post a clean scan result.

Update Avast4 and scan to be sure it is working right and scanning clean. If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close this topic.

    Hi Phil --

I'm in good shape now. You can close the thread. Thanks again for all your help. It's great to have the machine back in shape as well as a better understanding of what it takes to keep it clean.

    Best Regards,
