Do you have Automatic Updates on?
Changing them to Manual might help.
Did you install Comodo Firewall only?

i actually just put Updates to Automatic, they were on Manual when i posted that. the reason is that when i try to install updates it just hangs, it does not do anything...
yes, i installed only the Firewall.
could there be a conflict between Win Defender and Avast?
anyway the thing that bugs me most is the hard disk activity which is continuous even when no applications are open. the same culprits according to Resource Monitor (svchost etc)
I haven't heard about such conflict.
You can try to disable it and post back if it helped.
