Default Internet Explorer Won't Display on Screen

While troubleshooting and fixing a problem on my compter (Virtumonde & AWF) with pskelly, I used my wife's laptop to communicate with this forum and download files. I used a flash memory stick to tranfer the downloaded tools to my infected computer and also to transfer log files back to my wife's computer for inclusion in the forum posts. As a result, I believe that my wife's computer is now infected with something because Internet Explorer wont display on the screen or show up on the Task Bar. It appears to be loading because it shows up on the list of processes in Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del). If I make more than one attempt to start Internet Explorer, more that one item for IE shows up in the Windows Task Manager.

When any instance of iexplore.exe is running (according to Windows Task Manager) and I shutdown or restart Windows XP, a popup window appears, End Program - iexplore.exe, with a progress bar, that shows an unsucessful attempt to stop iexplore.exe. It says, "The program is not responding." I have to click the End Now button to get rid of this window.

Since I can't bring up IE and since I don't want to do any more file transfers with a flash memory stick, what are my options?

    Default Now IE Displays

I ran Spybot and no infections were found. I rebooted and now Internet Explorer comes up on the screen. So I downloaded HiJackThis and did a scan and here is the log file. But now I don't have a problem. I tried the reboot before, when the problem was present, and the problem remained, even after the reboot. But now, everything looks OK.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...00031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...120300087.html
    http://www.smartcomputing.com/editor...8s07/38s07.asp

Uninstall one of the antivirus programs and post a new HJT log. Make sure you read the information I posted so you understand the issues that can be caused as those programs conflict can be difficult to troubleshoot.

Since Internet Explorer 8 is already out on beta and IE7 is much safer, why are you still running IE6?

I am not seeing anything in the HJT log except what I mentioned, let's see what symptoms you are having once you are running one antivirus program.

    Thanks

Default Only one antivirus is running

I uninstalled Norton Anti-virus a long time ago when I installed AVG but the update feature was still installed. So, I uninstalled that, too. I updated to Internet Explorer ver 8 beta 2 and now I have no problems starting IE.

Prior to that, while running ver 6, I never had any problems with IE until I began transferring data between this computer (my wife's) and my computer (which was infected with Virtumonde at the time) using a flash memory stick. This could have been a coincidence.

As I mentioned in my initial post, IE would show up in the list of processes in Windows Task Manager even though it would not display or show up on the Task Bar. Under these conditions, the Mem Usage displayed in the list of processes in Windows Task Manager showed about 14 Mb whereas it showed from 40 Mb to 60 Mb when IE loaded correctly.

A reboot would always seem to correct the problem but if I closed IE, it would not load correctly again after the fist time. Anyway, things seem to be working OK now that I have upgraded IE.

I will also update my Java RTE as you had me do on my other computer.

Here is the latest HJT log file.

I suggest you post an uninstall list so I can have a look.
Post an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
    * Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
    * If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
    * On the left hand side, Click on Tools
    * Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
    * Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
    * Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

You still have Symantec running on the computer:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe
    O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe
Try this information: http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm or this:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...&osv=&osv_lvl=

When Symantec is totally removed, post that uninstall list and a fresh HJT log.

I uninstalled Norton Anti-virus when I switched over to AVG about two years ago. Between then and now, I trashed any Norton CDs that I had. So, I do not know what version I was using. That information is necessary because there is a different uninstall tool for each version of Norton Anti-virus.

I purchased that copy of Norton Anti-virus on 8/14/2006 and could assume that it was the Norton 2006 product. What are the dangers in proceeding on that assumption?

It is not necessary to quote my instructions, I know what I said and you can scroll back if you need to see

I would guess probably none but that is only my guess, I have never used Symantec/Norton and one of the reason is the lousy job the uninstallers do when you remove their product. We can try to remove the stuff manually if you wish.

    1) With TeaTimer disabled.
    C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

    2) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Symantec Core LC and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

    2) Right click the taskbar and click Task Manager, choose the Processes tab and End Process on this item:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

    3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ <<< delete that folder and contents

    4) Restart and post the uninstall list and a new HJT log.

Does this computer have any malware issues?

    Thanks

Default Unable to perform step 3

When I performed step (3) of your instructions, that item was not in the list.
