SNEAKY Spware.ISpyNow

Hello,
After clicking a few search results from Google, a dialog box now comes up that says Security Center Alert. The name given in the dialog box is Spware.ISpyNow. The dialog box prompts you to "enable protection" but if you click that you a redirected to a website that recommends the purchase of Spyware Defender 2009, which of course I did not purchase.
I have run Spybot S&D 1.6.0 with Tea Timer unchecked as per "BEFORE you POST" (READ this procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) and no viruses were found. I am also having trouble browsing with IE 7.0 and Firefox 3.0.4, both will crash when attempting to browse....but if you keep trying eventually you will be able to browse slowly. My homepage no longer displays either, instead an "Internet Security/Threat of Virus Message displays that resembles a real message from Windows.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

1) Post an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

2) DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we are working together.

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Windows Defender may block us:
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your protection back on when you finish.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

8) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\Documents and Settings\Troy R. Shandor\Application Data\Google\runhh6110411.exe <<< delete that file

9) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

10) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log and the uninstall list in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

A: Have been keeping computer offline except for troubleshooting

C: To answer your question "How is the computer running?" I no longer have the Spware.ISpyNow dialog box pop up BUT Symantec is constantly alerting me to something called a Trojan.Fakeavalert found in C:\System Volume Information\_restore{6A121D5F-8930-4849-829A-4FDAB23EA899}\RP155\A0026141.exe AND

BUT when I navigate to System Volume Information a dialog box comes up telling me System Volume Information is not available and access is denied. Other than that so far so good.....I will keep you posted.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.

SpywareBlaster v3.4 <<< this is a good program but it is out of date. To update you need to disable all protection, then uninstall it in Add Remove programs. Restart the computer and install the new version, here is a tutorial:

The items Symantec is finding are infected System Restore files, you can see MBAM also targeted those plus it removed more junk. Let's proceed like this:

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.

Update Symantec and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

Hi,
I apologize for the delay. I was having some trouble downloading Microsoft Windows Updates and didn't want to post a reply until that was squared away. Thank you for the PSI program, it was very useful in notifying me of a few programs that were in need of an update. Thanks to you I now know just because I have installed the latest version of a program, the old version does not automatically uninstall....I hope your jaw didn't drop to much with that comment. I followed all of your advice per the last post including Scanning with MBAM, Symantec, and Windows Defender. No malicious items were detected.

I do have two questions though:

1: "While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check." How would I do this?

2: The latest MBAM scan came back clean. Should I delete all the files located in the MBAM Quarantine folder?

2) You know, MBAM is a good tool but any tool can make a mistake, that is why it quarantine. If an error should be made, the item can be easily restored. Allow a few days after it removes stuff to make sure the computer is running right, then empty quarantine.
