    Default Computer Viruses including Virtumonde

    Problem:
    Pop-ups coming up, even when internet is not running.
    Slow.
    Could only start stably in Safemode and changing the System Config settings to Diagnostic Setup, however was able to recently start up under normal start up setting and collected Hijackthis file with all drivers and services running.

    Ran AVG Anti-virus
    Found several viruses.

    Ran Ad-Aware
    Found Virtumonde.

    Hi

    Please see

    and its post #5:
    Note:
    When the infected computer in question is a company machine in the workplace, and you are an employee.

    The intention of this forum is not to replace a company's IT department, nor can we anticipate alterations or configurations that may have been made to a business machine, or how it will interact with the tools commonly used in the removal of malware.

    More than one machine could be at stake, possibly even the server. If sensitive material has been compromised by an infection, the company could be held liable.

    To prevent any possible loss or corruption of company information, please inform your IT department or Supervisor when a workplace computer has been infected, immediately.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Thank you for your response. I read the "Before You Post" sticky, but the computer is no longer a work-related computer. It was my father's computer at his former place of work, but is most certainly no longer related to Endomatrix anymore. I should have cleared that up in my original post.

    A friend has received help from the Malware forums before and was very satisfied when the advice led to a fixed computer.

    Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks again.

    Ok. Thanks for clearing things up

    Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

    Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

    The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

    Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

    The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

    Please continue as follows:

    1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
      Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

    2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

    When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

    Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

    C:\ComboFix.txt
    New HijackThis log.

    A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

    Thanks for the quick response. I am having a couple of issues with the ComboFix tool. First, I read the pages on BleepingComputer and Windows to download the Recovery Console. I have Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 Version 2002 SP3- so I tried both Pro SP2 and Home SP2, but when I drag to ComboFix on the desktop nothing happens. Is there a different file from Windows for Tablet instead of Pro or Home?

    To clarify, my computer can only be run in Safe Mode, which may or may not be affecting the situation. I am downloading files on another computer and transferring them to the infected laptop via a flash drive.

    In summary, the Windows Recovery Console will not load, and attempts to run ComboFix without it lead to the same inaction. I checked the Task Manager and combofix.exe is there, with a mem usage of only 2,072k and no CPU action at all.

    If I start outside of Safe Mode, it will only last for about 10 seconds before freezing up.

    Appreciate any further help!

    Hi

    Please rename ComboFix.exe -> ComboFxx.exe and try running ComboFix again. ComboFix should ask if you want to install recovery console and then get it automatically if connection is working. If you can't install recovery console please try run ComboFix without RC.

    It rebooted under the guidance of combofix into Normal mode, and appears to be operating correctly so far. I'll wait for any further advice before I do anything else, but have looked at the list of programs to help keep my computer safe on the sticky and plan on doing all of those.

    IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

    Tor
    Azureus
    FrostWire

    I'd like you to read the this thread.

    Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

    Delete these folders afterwards:

    c:\documents and settings\Bruce Thiesen\Application Data\tor
    c:\documents and settings\Bruce Thiesen\Application Data\Azureus
    c:\program files\Azureus
    c:\documents and settings\Bruce Thiesen\Application Data\FrostWire
    c:\program files\FrostWire

    Empty Recycle Bin.

    After that:

    Start hjt, do a system scan, check (if found):
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
    if not set by yourself -> R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = ftp=localhost:8118;http=localhost:8118;https=localhost:8118;socks=localhost:9050
    if not set by yourself -> R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost;127.0.0.1

    Close browsers and fix checked.

    Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    Code:
    File::
    C:\ipkc.exe
    c:\windows\system32\winhlp.exe
    C:\qthqdso.exe
    C:\-1800984812

    c:\documents and settings\Bruce Thiesen\Application Data\tor
    c:\documents and settings\Bruce Thiesen\Application Data\Azureus
    c:\program files\Azureus
    c:\documents and settings\Bruce Thiesen\Application Data\FrostWire
    c:\program files\FrostWire

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{6D794CB4-C7CD-4c6f-BFDC-9B77AFBDC02C}]

    "{6D794CB4-C7CD-4c6f-BFDC-9B77AFBDC02C}"=-

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\awttqqNH]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
    "AppInit_DLLs"="avgrsstx.dll"

    "c:\\Program Files\\FrostWire\\FrostWire.exe"=-
    "c:\\Program Files\\Azureus\\Azureus.exe"=-

    Save this as
    CFScript

    A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

    Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
    Then post the resultant log.

    Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
    If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
    If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

    Thanks again for sticking with me on this.

    I removed the P2P software as directed, and ran HJT to remove the R0 and R1 entries as directed. Throughout the entire fix process I have had the wireless switch off and the LAN disconnected since I didn't know if I was still infected. When I tried to connect to get the Java update (and to do the online virus scan), my Network Connections folder was empty. Should it be? A message pops up regarding no Network Adapters. Until now I have been downloading files on another computer and transferring back and forth via a flash drive, but I can't seem to get the Java or the online virus scan onto the drive.

    Should the internet be inaccessible at this point? Do you need a new log of any sort?

    To open device manager:
    * Click on Start - Settings - Control Panel
    * Double click on System
    * Click on the Hardware tab at the top of the System Properties page
    * Click on Device Manager
