Default False Security Center Alert/Perfect Defender - Can't Remove

Over the past day, two symptoms began:

    1. A "Security Center Alert" began popping up. It has the Windows Shield and says Windows Firewall has detected Sinowal.Trojan. Directs me to "Perfect Defender" third-party page.

    2. When I open Firefox, my home page (Firefox Start Page) instead displays a page with a Windows shield (with exclamation point) saying "Insecure Internet Attack. Threat of Virus Attack." Below are two options (green shield, get "protection," and red shield, continue "unprotected").

From what I've been able to gather so far, Perfect Defender is a false positive/false advertising spyware program, I've run both Malwarebytes and Spybot. They removed a number of items, but nothing with the name "Perfect Defender" in it, and after multiple reboots, I'm still getting both the "Security Center Alerts" and the false home page.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide -- it's much appreciated.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

You are running both Symantec and AVG 8 and this is a bad thing:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...00031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...120300087.html
    http://www.smartcomputing.com/editor...8s07/38s07.asp

If Symantec is left from the uninstall, let me know so I can provide a tool to remove it, if not, uninstall it if AVG 8 is your choice.

    1) Post an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
    Image: http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...nstall-man.jpg

    We will try this first.

    2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

    3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    4) Open Task Manager (right click the task bar) under the Processes tab look for
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\Application Data\Google\xtgoj6119471.exe
highlite that item and End Process on it.

    5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(leave this item if you set it that way)
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

(suggest you remove this Dell junk)
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    6) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\Application Data\Google\xtgoj6119471.exe <<< delete that file

    7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
    http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...efetch-XP.html

If you still have MBAM you may use it but be sure to update first and run the program as instructed.

    7) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
    * Please post contents of that file, the uninstall list & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

    Tutorial if needed:

How is the computer running now?

    Thanks

The false "Security Center Alert" is no longer popping up, and the false home page is gone. Looks like there is still a reference to "xtgoj6119471.exe" in the new HJT log, but I don't know if that's a problem.

Computer running as well as it was pre-infection (still slower than ideal, but that's another matter ... need to add RAM and remove some programs -- any suggestions you have on that front would, of course, be greatly appreciated).

Thanks again -- I will await further instructions.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Thanks for the directions on completing removal of the malware, and all the additional suggestions on uninstalling Symantec and removing/updating out-of-date programs. I will work through those additional suggestions once the malware issue is resolved, but I'm assuming for purposes of this thread that I should follow your instructions on the malware first (please correct me if I'm wrong).

    Action taken on your directions

    1. Ran Hijack This (system only scan)

    2. Checked and fixed the following item:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [vxdhm] "C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\Application Data\Google\xtgoj6119471.exe"

    3. Navigated for xtgoj6119471 file in the Google folder under Application data, but could not find it. The Google folder contained the following items:

Local Search History folder (with 3 .w files)
T-Scan folder (with 3 gif files -- the three shields from the Perfect Defender alerts/false home page -- and a Thumbs.db file)
    Plugin folder (empty)
    1ptdfx.dll (63.KB)

    4. Restarted the computer, reopened this thread, and ran HijackThis to generate fresh log (copied below).

    5. Checked Google folder again, and noticed that the 1ptdfx.dll file was gone; the other three subfolders were unchanged.

Other actions taken since last post

Following your initial reply, I re-read the "Before you Post" thread and realized I had missed the instruction to backup all files before proceeding with fixes. Accordingly, I tried to setup a Western Digital external hard-drive (reflected in the fresh log below) and back up some files. The harddrive install didn't work, but I was able to backup essential files to a thumbdrive, and proceeded with your instructions.

Also, ZoneAlert notified me today that it blocked access to my computer from mail.trophynut.com.

    Here's the fresh HJT log:

I am not seeing any malware in the HJT log, only the Symantec leftovers. I should say that is what Zone Alarm is supposed to do, block threats. Look at the settings, you should be able to set it to block quietly without notifying you if you wish. Zone Alarm has a good tutorial if it helps.
Restore Zone Alarm Control Center > Overview > Status Tab > Tutorial is in the upper right corner. On that page you should be all of the "Blocked Intrusions" that have occured.

    Some good information for you:
