They changed this behavior, links are only scanned real-time if you enter a site

SiteAdvisor has outdated ratings, it's a waste of time ..

    ance,

Other than what's displayed on the page(s) you linked above, what more have you found about how this actually works? All I can see is that it's pre-scanning the pages for things it can already detect, so I don't see anything really new or of additional value here.

Since Internet Explorer 7, the ability to capture anything downloaded from a web site and examine it before it's made available to the file system has already existed. Though this ability doesn't exist for IE 6, anyone still using that browser doesn't really care about security anyway, since it's known to be exploitable no matter what else you attempt to protect it.

I don't see anything here other than marketing, similar to the 'email scanner' craze back before that vector was closed by the Windows APIs that allow antivirus software to check files before being commited to the filing system.

You are right, it's just a kind of "standalone webshield". LinkScanner is now part of the AVG family and free - this is new! For example: Avira Free has no webshield feature, AVG LinkScanner may be a good addition

WOT is blocking too much, it also blocked my homepage (which is free of viruses!)

I have not experienced that problem myself, however one can change personal settings in WOT to allow a site. I do disable WOT when researching a known bad site.

I find WOT effective for users in a search engine because one can see the colored rings rating the site either green, orange or red without clicking on the item.

Thus if one clicked on a site rated RED a warn would come up in the browser. Doing its job.

Have you contacted Web Of Trust to find out why your site is on the warn list and ask how to remove the bad rating?

    Best regards.
