Question Malware problem - web redirects/etc

    Hi guys

My wife's PC is redirecting both Firefox and IE on attempts to visit a wide range of sites, especially any of the anti-virus stuff. It redirects via "google-redirect.com" and "homesearchtulsa.com". It also is interfering with things like setting desktop background(?? why!), and installing - I copied downloads for spybot, spydoctor, adaware across on a memory stick but in normal mode I could not run/install any of them, it simply hung when I tried.

The PC also blue-screened twice, which it has never done before.

In safe mode I was able to install the 3 named above, but spybot can't download its updates in safe mode, and seems blocked from doing so in normal mode. Spydoctor 'recognises' several high-threat-level trojan related items, but won't give details or try to remove them without a registration fee (among other things, not willing to type card details into a PC that seems this compromised...!).

I am going to go back now and try to get HJT going via safemode and back in, and will post any results here. Any initial advice?

    Thanks!

Any advice appreciated - ran Anti-Malware in safe mode and ID'ed 5 high-threat items, removed them, ran it again in normal and found 1 high threat, removed it, however there is clearly still something wrong; e.g. AdAware won't install, and e.g. Spybot won't download updates - when I tried to run the zip update package the machine reboots. However at least for now the webpage redirection seems to have stopped.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions, you must have done this or you will waste your time and mine.

    For your information:

    1) Post all logs in Normal Mode (not Safe Mode)

    2) TeaTimer from Spybot S&D must be disabled

    3) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
    * Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

    Tutorial if needed:

    4) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list
    )

MBAM shows nothing but one infected System Restore file that we will clean soon.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Flash Player 9 ActiveX <<< out of date and unsafe
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
    http://www.adobe.com/support/securit...apsb09-01.html

Adobe Reader 7.1.0 <<< out of date and unsafe

(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

All out of date and unsafe:

Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.

    Viewpoint Media Player
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

Have a look at this information:
    O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - C:\Program Files\BAE\BAE.dll

    http://www.geekstogo.com/2008/07/19/...ck-yahoo-mail/

I suggest we do some cleaning, like this:

View all files and folders for this Operating System:
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...l62.html#winxp

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - C:\Program Files\BAE\BAE.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\Program Files\BAE <<< delete that folder if there

    Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
    http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...efetch-XP.html

How is the computer running, please describe any malware issues.

    Thanks

Thanks again. I performed the cleaning fixes you listed, and I'll work my way through the less-than-safe installations and updating items where appropriate next.

The malware-type PC issues (still happening now) are - most or all Control Panel options won't open dialogue boxes after selecting, i.e. I can't click through to Display Properties, or System, or Security Center, etc. After spending a few minutes trying, the machine blue-screened.

Browser redirecting has possibly stopped. The machine 'feels slow'.

Running another complete MBAM scan that I can post the log from when done, if relevant.

I would appreciate it if you would follow the directions to run this free diagnostic scan and post the results first.
Register free and run the test, post a link to the results so I can view them.

(there is no reason to purchase anything, the diagnostic report is free)
The malware-type PC issues (still happening now) are - most or all Control Panel options won't open dialogue boxes after selecting, i.e. I can't click through to Display Properties, or System, or Security Center, etc. After spending a few minutes trying, the machine blue-screened.
Can you tell me about any error messages occuring with those symptoms? It's possible there may be one more files that are corrupt of even missing, please follow the directions in this link to run System File Checker:

You have a lot of running processes that are likely not needed at every boot, like SUPERAntiSpyware which I suggest you uninstall unless you purchased it. Not a bad program, but uses resources.

I do not need to see that log...thanks

Recap: Post the link to the diagnostic report at PCPitStop and any error messages you are receiving.

    Thanks

In general, no error messages with the symptoms described - they simply get clicked on, hourglass for a second or three, then nothing at all happens.

For the BSOD, it was the sort that contains a STOP message with hexadecimal following it, but no file or driver names or anything like that, just the generic warning text.

That's, please make sure you click the links to see what is suggested for each item. Note that you have a load of storage being used for System Restore. Where suggested is 1696 MB's, you are using 28,031 MB's.
Please also note that you have two drivers that need updating, out of date drives can cause many problems hard to explain.

This will clean that one infected System Restore file MBAM found:

Trying to run SFC - ran for quite some time, eventually got the pop-up "Files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache, insert your CD" dialogue.

As I don't have an XP CD, I read the link to the site guide you posted, and attempted to change my registry sourcepath entry to point to C:/ for C:/i386 folder - however it was already set to C: as it turns out, and it still doesn't work. From the guide site, it sounds like this means my i386 folder is corrupted...?
