Question External HD on Potentially Infected Computer

I was infected with some malware last night and already posted in the Removal forum. I may or may not have already removed it from my system. While waiting to hear back about that, I thought this would be a good time to finally get around to setting up a really good backup system for my computer. In the past I'd periodically burned CDs of my files, but I've been meaning to get an external hard drive that would run scheduled backups of my system.

I think I've settled on the Seagate BlackArmor WS 110 (1 TB) or PS 110 (500 GB). Both come with antivirus software and even special areas on the drive to test install software before it goes on your computer, in case it's malware.

Without knowing if my computer is currently infected, would it be safe to set up one of these hard drives? Or could it potentially become infected, too? Also, do you have any opinions on these or other external HDs for system backups?

Once a helper responds to your malware forum topic http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=49847 please ask that question there.
