What is DDS?

I posted a hijackthis log a few days ago in the Malware removal forum and only just realized a message at the bottom of the post alerting me that hijackthis is no longer being used. I've done a few google searches on DDS and came across a few links, so far I've downloaded a dds.com file and a dds.scr file. When I double click on them a window pops up with some text but it disappears within a few seconds so I didn't have enough time to read what it said.
Have I downloaded the right program? And if I successfully create a DDS logfile should I post a new thread or should I leave the original thread with the hijackthis log?

If you have started a topic posting a HJT log that's fine.
No need to add a DDS log as it would remove the zero response to topic that Helpers look for.

The forum FAQ shows how to produce a DDS log and also provides links to download.
