Default 'Windows / Global (Hosts)' missing: Am I 'the only one'? Haven't found my issue...

    ...through a Google search

I have a notebook and a netbook, both based on XP Pro. And both of them are equipped with Spybot version 1.6.2.46.

On their Immunize pages, the NOTEbook displays one last line called
'Windows / Global (Hosts)'. On my NETbook, however, I just cannot get this line to appear, despite several installation attempts. I am the admin for both machines and did use this mode.

Does anyone of you have an an idea where I went wrong, and how I would fix it? Any founded tips very welcome indeed.

True, I'm not exactly a pc expert, still:

Was my question 'stupid' (why - I didn't find this topic discussed before), or why is it that there is no reaction at all?

If it wasn't, may some 'senior member' could take care of it?

    Hello,

Was this a fresh install of Spybot-S&D?

At any time did you remove your HOSTS File.

Was there an infection on the machine in question.

Global (Hosts) in Spybot Immunize (bottom item in that window) adds items to the Windows hosts file. Some programs will prevent changes.

Is Global Hosts grayed out or non existent?

You could try this suggestion by md usa spybot fan.
    To repair your HOSTS file:

    Default Can't solve it

    Hello,

    ==> Hi

Was this a fresh install of Spybot-S&D?

    ==> Yes it was.

At any time did you remove your HOSTS File.

==> Not consciously. Until Spybot came, I wasn't even aware of their existence.

Was there an infection on the machine in question.

==> Not 100 % sure, but I would tend to say: I don't think there was.

Global (Hosts) in Spybot Immunize (bottom item in that window) adds items to the Windows hosts file. Some programs will prevent changes.
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=36272

==> I use none of the programmes mentioned there.

Is Global Hosts grayed out or non existent?

    ==> It is non-existent.

You could try this suggestion by md usa spybot fan.
    To repair your HOSTS file:
    http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...3&postcount=10

==> I tried but didn't succeed, despite of several Spybot uninstall/reinstall processes, plus ditto rebooting. I even tried what is described here

    http://www.tech-pro.net/how-to-check...osts-file.html ,

    including

    http://www.tech-pro.net/files/fixhosts.exe -

still no difference. Cf also my hosts file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc attached. So there's no long-distance solution available, I guess?

    Thanks for trying to help.

    Hello global_host,

The HOSTS file attached above shows the default sample by Microsoft.
    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost
Apparently no other HOSTS file has been added?

    Please open Spybot-S&D.

On the menu bar select Mode > Advanced Mode.

Read the dialog box and click "Yes"

In the menu on the left click on "Tools"

Select Hosts file > Add Spybot S&D Hosts list.

    See if that helps.
