After freezing and crashing, Avira Antivirus corrupted and general mayhem

I am having some strange issues with my computer after a freeze while using IE8. The most concerning issues are Avira Anti Virus Premium 2012 reported it was out of date but then wouldn't run it's updater and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware would not run. I was able to un-install and re-install both Avira and MBAM. I have run Avira update and scanned my computer using Avira then MBAM and then Spybot. None of these reported any problems.
