Unhappy Please Help Remove Windows Security Master

    Dear Spybot Team,

My husband recently clicked on a security warning (Windows Security Master) thinking it was legit. It has rendered the computer nearly useless. Since this is my husband’s office laptop he is actually considering paying them to remove it! I am horrified he’d even consider perpetuating such evil and told him to let me find help first! I’m embarrassed to say it, but, I have come here before (successfully) for your gracious help. I’m hoping you will please help me again.

Here is a brief history of what happened and what has been done since:
The computer had been sluggish of late, so when a “windows” security warning came up, my DH clicked on a it thinking it was legit and related to the slowness (because after all it said “windows”). He assumed he was in the Windows Security Center searching for what may be causing his issues. Problem is, he doesn’t know what he’s doing and was clicking on ‘things’ to see what they were! Somewhere in the melee that erupted after clicking something (Identity Theft in Progress warning, etc.) the computer RESTARTED ON ITS OWN! Realizing he was tricked he immediately shut down the computer!

Since restarting the computer there are now pop-ups and warnings. And of course any solution requires an upgrade/payment to fix it. Everything is consistent with a Windows Security Master malware description I was able to find online using my computer!! A Malware Removal link we followed to Bleepingcomputer.com did not help us because the malware prevented us from following through with their removal instructions. Per the instructions, we were able to start up in safe mode and add RemVimes to the registry((??). But once we restarted and the desktop reappeared, we were prevented from downloading MBAM (even from a thumb drive and after trying to rename the file too). Realizing we were going to need personalize assistance I came here before digging the hole any deeper.

Your help or advice would be most appreciated! I read the sticky note and followed the instructions the best I could. I was able to download ERUNT (off of a thumb drive)on the infected computer, but I cannot not open it. I was able to produce the DDS and aswMBR logs. The DDS log is pasted below. I tried to attach aswMBR log but I don't know how to zip it (*gulp* even after reading how ).

    Hi and welcome

phew!, got my reservations here if I can help but I do want to try.

We need to experiment with something first.

See if you can follow these instructions to get into safe mode or into Command Prompt

We are going to try System Restore to restore the system prior to the infection.

    Depending on your Windows version.

    Option 1.

Step 1: Use F8 to Boot to SafeMode With Command Prompt
Step 2: Use ctrl/alt/del (keys) to get task manager opened
Step 3: choose file and create new task
    Step 4: Then Navigate to:
C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and press Enter and press Enter (double click rstrui.exe) and press Enter (double click rstrui)
Step 5: Restore Computer to a Date you know you were virus free
    Step 6: Run Malwarebytes

    Option 2.

Step 1: Use F8 to Boot to SafeMode With Command Prompt
At the command prompt type in: rstrui.exe

    Let me know.

Please do not PM me for Malware help, we all benefit from posting on the open board.

Type or print out these instructions to help with the following procedure

Thought I would go on and post this information since I will have to leave for a while, see if you can follow up with this:

On a clean machine, please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
    • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account an click Next.

    Default So far so good!

Thank you Julie for giving this a shot!

Okay, I started in safe mode. Couldn't quite access system restore exactly via your instructions but I got there nonetheless accidentally. A restore "completed successfully". I then restarted and so far no sign of the problem. I was also able to access the internet and download MBAM directly to the desktop from the infected computer.

A MBAM quick (default) scan is underway. Should I be doing the full scan instead?

    That is fantastic!

Run a quick scan then, post this log in your next reply

    THEN

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

(use correct version for your system.....Which system am I using?)

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
    • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
    • Please copy and paste log back here.
    • The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

    Default Question before I proceed

    I better have this clarified.

Let me know if you want me to "remove selected" bad guys mbam detected!
    Yes

    OK

    Run this instruction first,
The 'OK' is throwing me off. Yes, you want me to delete the bad guys. BUT FIRST, you want me to run all the instructions before I do that? Or, remove them, then proceed with the instructions?

Sorry,I just don't want to do anything out of order!

I'm sorry, I went back and edited that in, you can run the MBAM scan first it wont hurt anything.
Let it delete what is found, then run the Fix.txt I created, then the 2 other scanners.

    All should be rather quick.

What I would like is that it go without delay, don't wont anything to be able to grasp back on to the computer.

    Default Requested Logs

    Hi Juliet,

Here are the requested logs. Sorry I am so pokey. I have to wrap my head around step one before I can move to step 2.

The computer seems to be working okay. Certainly WAY BETTER than before the restore. After the restore there was some freezing when I tried to side load MBAM from a thumb drive. I had some difficulty ending the program (ctrl+alt+delete stalled or didn't work either) so I just restarted. I was then able to open the browser and download directly, which I hadn't been able to do before the restore.

When I opened the AdwCleaner folder there were two text documents created five minutes apart to choose from, AdwCleaner[RO} and AdwCleaner{SO]. I pasted the [SO] one because yours in the directions had an [S*]. Do you want the other as well?

    Robin
