    Question Cryptowall 2.0

First of all, let me give you a great big THANK YOU! Spybot Home (loaded on 2 computers) took over 5 hours to scan and found NUMEROUS viruses which were all cleaned and both computers are working fairly well.

I have a big problem with one however. After starting windows and selecting a user, the entire screen is taken over by a slick Chinese threat called Cryptowall 2.0. The language is broken English with threats that all files have been transferred via the internet to a Chinese site which will allow me to "recover" them provided I give bank account numbers, credit card numbers, and social security numbers. The threat is mult-color but also loads as a background window in plain-text on Windows "NOTEPAD."

I was wondering how to prevent this from showing up EVERYTIME I log on to my computer.

THANKS VERY MUCH! We love SPYBOT!

    Best regards, Captaingary

Never give your bank account numbers, credit card numbers, and social security numbers to anyone.
By chance, did you see or can you search for the below files to confirm you have a Crypto infection

    DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.HTML
    INSTALL_TOR; DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.TXT.

If you do find these files then I'm afraid I have bad news

Default This is what I get

What happened to your files ?
All of your files were protected by a strong encryption with RSA-2048 using CryptoWall 2.0.
More information about the encryption keys using RSA-2048 can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSA_(cryptosystem)

    What does this mean ?
This means that the structure and data within your files have been irrevocably changed, you will not be able to work with them, read them or see them,
it is the same thing as losing them forever, but with our help, you can restore them.

    How did this happen ?
Especially for you, on our server was generated the secret key pair RSA-2048 - public and private.
All your files were encrypted with the public key, which has been transferred to your computer via the Internet.
Decrypting of your files is only possible with the help of the private key and decrypt program, which is on our secret server.

    What do I do ?
Alas, if you do not take the necessary measures for the specified time then the conditions for obtaining the private key will be changed.
If you really value your data, then we suggest you do not waste valuable time searching for other solutions because they do not exist.

    Default Thanks Juliet

Please tell me the bad news....

I'm not sure how to check if those files are on my hard drive...

If I wipe my hard drive clean and start all over, how will I reload windows and Spybot?

    Thanks!

As far as removing Cryptowall 2.0 infection, I cannot.

You need it diagnosed first that for sure thats what you have on your machine.

Then please start a new topic here in the forum below as possible Cryptowall 2.0 infection. Someone should ask the correct questions in helping to diagnose and give more details as to what, if anything, can be done.

Exclamation One CANNOT wipe CRYPTOWALL 2.0

    Hello again, Juliet,

I never heard back from sales on how to re-install/reload SPYBOT HOME EDITION.

Admin edit: Apprantly sales did not receive a ticket from you so I gave them your address and they sent you an email.

However, it might be a moot point as CRYPTOWALL 2.0 cannot be removed by re-formatting the hard drive. I completely re-formatted "C" drive to factory defaults, re-installed Windows and everything worked fine and FAST for a little while. Windows updated everything (including DEFENDER) and now BLOCKS Cryptowall at every turn. However, it is somehow running behind the scenes slowing everything down and making a beeping noise that happens a few times every minute.

I am going to YANK my hard drive and take it down to a tech. Or... will a big powerful magnet do the trick???

    Have a great day!

Also, the only way to shutdown is to just turn off the power switch! GRRRRRR!

    Hope you were not re-infected.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...l#entry3526702

A repository of all current knowledge regarding CryptoWall & CryptoWall 2.0 is provided by Grinler (aka Lawrence Abrams), in this tutorial: CryptoWall and DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION Ransomware Information Guide and FAQ
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/viru...re-information

Reading that Guide will help you understand what CryptoWall & CryptoWall 2.0 does and provide information for how to deal with it and possibly decrypt/recover your files. At this time there is no fix tool for CryptoWall.

CryptoWall 2.0 uses its own TOR gateways...see Updated CryptoWall 2.0 ransomware released that makes it harder to recover files.
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...recover-files/

There is also a lengthy ongoing discussion in this topic: CryptoWall - new variant of CryptoDefense.
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...cryptodefense/

Rather than have everyone start individual topics, it would be best (and more manageable for staff) if you posted any questions, comments or requests for assistance in that topic discussion.
