Welcome to the forum, Steve it seems you anticipated the Vundo trojan and renamed HJT. You do indeed have the trojan, but I am seeing evidence you may also have Smitfraud. I would like to run the tools to make sure it is gone first.

Follow the directions in this link: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=4015 When you finish the instructions, post the three logs in this same topic using the "Post Reply" button.

Spybot-S&D: Be sure to follow the directions to save the scan report but do not post it here unless requested by a helper.

    Thanks...pskelley

If you would like to let your thoughts be known about the lowlifes who put that junk on your computer, you can do that here:
If you have been infected by one of the SpyAxe family
    http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=58063
    http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/

Please complete those instruction and post those logs. As soon as possible after I see those, we will move against that Vundo trojan. It's going to take a little work to clean you up and my advice is to stay offline as much as possible. The junk will attract more.

    Thanks

Red face malware removal trogan vundo

Hi pskelly! Thanks for your quick response it is much appreciated. Anyway i followed the steps u requested and it seemed to go smoothly... apart from the blank screen i received after step 8 regarding smitfraud. I dropped to a blank screen when executing option 2 (clean) which related to non infected computers, (so the warning said), probably doesn't meen anything just thought i'd let u know. I should also let u know i ran the symantec trojan vundo removal tool a couple of days ago in normal mode and safe mode.... obviously didnt help!! Anyway here's my logs that you requested. Yours Sincerely Steve.

Thanks for returning your information, as you can see from the results of SmitfraudFix, you definately had that infection. Good job following the directions.

    1) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

    2) The Vundo trojan can be a little tricky, this is what it looks like:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BADE22B0-5448-4A52-B889-5D44557AAE55} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geeda.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: geeda - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geeda.dll
The hackers keep changing the file name and the tool may need to learn the name of the file. If it does not recognize it the first time, I would appreciate it if you would upload the file to the link provided. Once the fix indicates that all "files have been deleted", it is gone and you can move on to the balance of the instructions.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
    • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

(hold those logs until you finish)

    3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

    4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ousygxd.dll <<< delete that file

    7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log. Let me know how the computer is running now.

    Thanks

    Smile malware removal trojan vundo

Hi, Ok so far so good everything seems ok but running a little slow on startup. may just be the programs running in the start up menu (nortons, adaware). All went well except i was unable to locate any files with the name ousygxd.dll in c:\windows\systems32\ or in this recent hijackthis scan of system (04- HKLM\..\Run: [ousygxd.dll] c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe) apart from that all good. thanks for the help so far! If you have any advice on how to prevent this from happening again i.e Software/programmes to use it would be much appreciated. here are the logs requested. Yours Thankfully Steve

Morning Steve, you had this to say:
i seem to be having slow startup times and long pauses when executing programs/files
    See this: http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1925
Cleaning the Prefetch folder will slow things for a few boots until Windows repopulates that folder with the files you need. It can also be that file/files have been corrupted. I suggest you have your Windows CD handy and run your System File Checker to see if it fixes the problem. If you need instructions for doing this, let me know.

I will know more once I look at the log, sometimes HJT will remove files before we check for them manually. I tend to overcheck at time to be sure the junk is gone. When we finish, I will post links from experts in the malware removal/security business. If all of your questions are not aswered then, please post and I will do my best to answer them.
This HJT log appears clean of malware. I do see a lot of programs running at every boot that you may not need and could be started in All Programs when you do. Look at this information: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ I would NOT turn off any security programs you are running.

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Review the information I posted, let's give it 48 hours to see how things are running. I will ask tashi not to close the topic until you post to let me know all is well.

    Thanks...Phil
