Thanks
Thanks Zenobia.
I suspect that there is something interrupting Spybot.
Although I have done a scan for v1/v2 and Vscan with ad aware, they came up wth no detection.
How I got Spybot to work, although briefly:
I cleaned Spybot out of my Computer System.
I hacked all spybot out of the registry and the program files.
I restarted the computer and then downloaded a fresh Spybot 1.4 to the desktop. I installed it, updated it and it worked fine. I did a scan and it picked up about 6 things which I cannot find the log for because it got deleted. I do remember a CWS entry but I cannot remember what it was. It was not the v1/v2 thing.
I shut down the computer late last night and when I restarted it the next day, spybot would not start.
Also tried:
I cleaned Spybot out of my computer and tried installing Spybot 1.3. It does not work.
I cleaned Spybot and Ad Aware out of my computer. I installed Spybot and then installed Ad Aware and it made no difference. Neither Spybot 1.3 nor 1.4 will work.
I have done numerous online scans:
Trend Micro and Symantec to name a few. Nothing found.
Bitdefender would not work because of an ActiveX issue.
I'll try Panda scan next.
As I said, I suspect that something is interrupting Spybot. Whatever it is, it kills both Versions 1.4 and 1.3. However, scans for the particular CWS nasty
that targets Spybot detected nothing.
Glad to provide any info that will help determine what is interrupting Spybot.
Thanks for the response, Zenobia.
Let me know what else I can provide. Maybe I ought to go to Malware?

Yes,it might be a good idea if you got checked out in malware.(unless Tashi or someone comes along and posts otherwise.)
The instructions are here:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
Of course, you'll have to skip the part about scanning with Spybot, since it won't open.
Here is Malware Removal:

You could also post a link to this thread if you post in malware, just so any Helper that picks up your case would know the background(Spybot not starting, etc.)

I still think you ought to consider getting checked in the Malware Removal forum.

Additonal info
You can use HiJack This to eliminate Winsock32.exe entries from your startup list so you you do not have to eliminate from Task Manager all the time.
I will also consult Malware Removal.
Thanks Zenobia.
