Trouble removing pop-ups

About 4 days ago my wife downloaded and ran something she shouldn't have. By the time I got on the computer that night it was almost unuseable. (It had been pop-up clean and no troubles before then. It had been 6 months since I last ran spy removal tools - always before it just had to clean out tracking cookies.)

I ran AdAware and Spyboy - and it cleaned up a bunch of stuff. However, a couple of things did not go away - there were three things under the title of SmitFraud-C. Of course, many others came back quickly - like WebBuyingAssistant some others.

I eventually saw the ComboFix program that was mentioned on this forum. I ran that and things did improve considerably. The SmitFraud stuff that SpyBot could not remove is now gone.

Unfortunantly, my problems are still not gone. (In retrospect I should not have run ComboFix before posting - but at that time I could not have typed a sentance before things would have gone haywire.

The symptoms now are that the pop-ups start happening again immediately after I clean and reboot - just not a frequent, but frequent enough to be annoying. SpyBot and AdAware are able to remove items they find - but they come back fairly quickly. I might get a dozen things or so - but I almost always see Zendo and WebBuyingAssistant. Nothing seems to stop the pop-ups.

I'm at a total loss as to what I should do next - please help!

Hi Ray, not for nothing, it is your computer, but I will caution you some of these fixes that can be found can do damage if run when the infection they are created for is not present.

I would like to help, follow the directions I posted which are also pinned to the top of this forum. Post at least a HJT log and please tell me about the popups, where do they want you to go, or what do they want you to buy, anything you think will help. Please also post any error message from Windows word for word.

If you have any logs or scan reports, let me know and I will tell you if I want to see them.

As far as the content of the pop-ups - well they very. I see ones for CarsDirect, ScreenSavers.com. Many of them have "This ad is brought to you by Web Buying" at the bottom of the pop-up.

Hi Ray and thanks for posting your HJT log. I am glad you seem to know you way around the computer some because this cleanup may be a bit tricky, we are running into items I am not sure of. I will share all information with you and we will run combofix, a utility tool to see what it picks up and go from there.

I am not sure if you had HJT but it is a beta and a newer version has been released. Please open the "Before you Post" link scroll down to: HiJackThis log - Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2 and download the newest version. My suggestion would be to use the Direct Executable and Save that file into the same folder:
C:\SpywareFixers\ <<< there, you may call the folder anything you wish, but please store nothing but HJT related in that folder for safety.

The hackers change the names to keep us from finding and removing their junk. We may be dealing with a rootkit infection here also.

Ok - that was a lot to process! Not too happy this isn't an easy thing either - but that will teach me!

Here are the steps I've taken:

1) I do not know where the Bubbles BHO came from - I do not recall installing anything with that name.
It show up in the Add Remove programs. However, attempting to remove failed and it still shows up
in HTJ.

2) I do trust www.paytrust.com - but I'm not sure why it was spelled www.paytrust.cxom. I removed
it from the trusted zones.

3) I have know idea why the transfers.ds.microsoft.com thing is there. It *might* be related to
some MS thing tool I was using but I do not know what that would be. I would have no problem
removing it (though I;m not sure how.)

4) I do not know what PortReporter is. However, I did an "rd /S /Q c:\program files\PortReporter"
and it did get removed. This might have been a program I used in the past. I am a developer
who has worked on SIP and other networking technologies. I think this was a tool from MS:

5) I had used FireDaemon sometime back to host a Subversion repository. However, sometime ago
I had removed the program. I'm pretty sure the description for that defunct service is actully
something I typed in at the time. It looks like I may not have cleaned up the service I had created
with it before doing the uninstall.

I went ahead and removed the Registry key at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/svn
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/EventLog/Application/svn

6) I set the options to view all files and folders as suggested.

7) I am now kicking my self because at step 4 I deleted portreporter.exe. Crud - I can't run the
virus scan thing you asked me to run. (As I mentioned in step 5 I had deleted Fireaemon many
months ago so that one was not there as well.) However, I'm pretty sure those were both tools
I had installed for development reasons.

8) Moving on - I ran ComboFix. The log is attached below.

9) After running ComboFix I saw no pop-ups! I surfed the web for a while and things were all
cool!

I rebooted and things still seem cool. I have not seen any pop-ups for a while now.
I guess this fixed it.


Please let me know if you would like the HJT log as well for any purpose that would help
you guys out. Otherwise, feel free to close the thread.

Hi Ray, thanks for returning your information and the feedback. This one was a little complex for me also, strange items I am not used to seeing. But I felt the only way to do it was to give you the information and go from there.

combofix did locate stuff HJT was not showing which could have been our problem.

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Sorry for the delay in my reply. I had to be out of town over the weekend.
Here are the results of the virus scan. I actually ran it twice - it was showing infected files - but I noticed they were in the System Restore points. I deleted all the old restore points and then reran the scan.

Thanks for returning the HJT log, I usually wait until all malware is gone so System Restore can not get infected again, as it probably happened.
