Red face Remnants of Backdoor.Graybird and Dropper.Small.abe?

    Hi all,

Helping out my in-laws with their old desktop...

Found a few things AVG Antispyware categorized as Downloaders, Droppers, Adware and a Dialer. Cleaned a few times with AVG and turned off system restore, uninstalled a bunch of games and other programs, now I'm wondering if there's anything left to worry about....

HJT now comes up with this:

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 11:59:24 PM, on 7/25/2007

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Turn on System Retore if it is still off. We decided a bad restore point is better than no restore point in an emergency.

I'm not really seeing any malware, are there any issues? Since you have AVG Anti-Spyware on board, run a scan according to these instructions:
Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
    http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

Post the scan results and any comments you think will help.

    Thanks

Question Probably nothing left to worry about... ?

    Hi,

Here's the latest AVG scan report:

    + S c a n r e s u l t :

    N o t h i n g f o u n d .

    : : R e p o r t e n d

Is this pretty definitive evidence I'm clean now?

The reason I ask is that there's still some suspicious traffic showing up on my Sygate Personal firewall logs (or maybe it's harmless and I just don't know what it is):

    7/26/2007 10:33:44 PM Blocked 10 Incoming ICMP 130.81.38.102 00-0F-B3-DD-EF-8E 3 192.168.1.2 00-03-47-BF-69-09 1 Mario S********* Normal 3 7/26/2007 10:32:34 PM 7/26/2007 10:32:43 PM Block_all

    7/26/2007 10:37:58 PM Blocked 10 Incoming UDP 169.254.1.58 00-19-5E-88-4F-15 64902 169.254.1.255 FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF 5000 Mario S********* Normal 26 7/26/2007 10:31:15 PM 7/26/2007 10:37:45 PM Block_all

the Remote Host IP addresses here are 130.81.38.102 & 169.254.1.58 and the activity is being responded to by C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\ndisuio.sys, which has been a Windows component hijacked by entrenched spyware in the past.

I think one of these may be a Verizon-owned IP (this PC's ISP), and the other's a special-use IP, so maybe it's nothing after all...

Thanks much for the cleanup help,

    LS

Thanks for returning your information, here is what I find as a result of what you posted.

    http://whois.domaintools.com/169.254.1.58

As you can see the scan and you HJT log are showing no issues. Do you have any reason to suspect malware?

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...s/mcgill1.mspx

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
