    Default Help Request : Virtumonde Infection

    Hi,

    My computer is infected, spybot has recognized it as Virtumonde.

    Symptoms: Disabled my Automatic Updates, and I could not enable it back. Pop out random windows on both IE and Firefox. Many attempts of deleting it using Spybot but it always comes back, even in SafeMode.

    I have AntiVir as antivirus and it could not catch the virus. I have tried Adaware, VundoFix, and VirtumundoBeGone and nothing seemed to work.

    I have ran Kaspersky, then ComboFix, then Hijackthis. I am posting ComboFix and Hijackthis log in this post. I will keep Kapersky in handy if needed.

    Any help is GREATLY appreciated, thank you for your time.

    Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
    "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
    All advice given is taken at your own risk.
    Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

    You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

    You missed some instructions at the top of this forum.
    Do NOT run 'fixes' before helpers have analyzed HJT/KAV scans
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=16806
    ComboFix is not a general purpose cleaning tool. Please do not use this tool without supervision.

    1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
    * Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
    * If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
    * On the left hand side, Click on Tools
    * Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
    * Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
    * Restart your computer.
    (leave TT disabled until we finish)

    2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
    http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
    Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
    to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

    3) How to make files and folders visible:
    Click Start > Open My Computer.
    Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
    Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
    Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
    You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

    4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
    Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    (be very carefull with the CFScript instructions or the fix will not work!!)

    5) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

    Code:
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\opbomnsb.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mqmwfetv.ini

    Save this as CFScript

    Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

    This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finisher to post the logs)

    6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    (some items may be gone, removed by the script, don't be concerned)

    Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    7) Run ATF Cleaner
    Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

    Restart and post the combofix log from CFScript, a new HJT log and some feedback from you...how is the computer running.

    Thanks

    Default Thankyou!

    Hi,

    Thank you so much for taking your time to help me. I really appreciate it.

    The computer seems to be running normally now, hopefully it stays that way, haha.

    After you check these logs, and if everything is fine, could I turn teatimer back on again? I'm not sure what the ResetTeaTimer.bat did, or what I have to do to turn it back on again. If you could help me with that, that'd be great, thank you so much again for your help.

    Here is the ComboFix log right after the CFScript :

    could I turn teatimer back on again? I'm not sure what the ResetTeaTimer.bat did, or what I have to do to turn it back on again.
    ResetTeaTimer.bat just cleaned TeaTimer's memory so it would not block us from removing junk from the HJT log. When you turn it on, just reverse the instructions you used to turn it off.

    Your HJT log looks clean of malware and I would like to see a NEW Kaspersky Online Scan to make sure no malware is hiding, but before we do that we have this bridge to cross:

    I am sure you saw this:
    WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix
    Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
    If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
    If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

    Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

    Thanks

    Hi pskelley,

    Thank you for your help again, I was reading up on installation process of recovery console but I could not find my XP CD.

    I wasn't comfortable downloading the provided files from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994 because I have Service Pack 3 in XP Media Edition and the site only have up to Service Pack 2 and only with Home and Professional. I don't know where else to find the boot files that fits my computer set up. If you know of any, I would gladly go ahead and try to install the recovery console.

    Or we can go ahead with the cleaning.

    Thank you!

    Has to be your call, but I have been told that the file for SP2 for your Operating System will work. Here is a little information about RC:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

    If you would prefer to move on, first remove combofix:
    Click START then RUN
    Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
    Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    Let's look at a new Kaspersky Online Scan to make sure we are missing no malware, use these settings:

    * The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    * Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    * Now click on Scan Settings
    * In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    * Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    * Standard
    * Scan Options:
    * Scan Archives
    * Scan Mail Bases
    * Click OK
    * Now under select a target to scan:
    * Select My Computer
    * This will program will start and scan your system.
    * The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    * Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    * Now click on the Save as Text button:
    * Save the file to your desktop.

    Then post it here. <<< I do not need to see a clean scan results.

    Thanks...Phil

    This is probably only one file, looks like who ever supplied you with WinZix-2.0-setup-0514.exe
    also supplied you with a trojan, take care to scan your downloads before you install them when you are not sure of the source. I might also mention that if this was to unzip files, WindowsXP has that ability built into it.
