    Default Desktop Hijacked with Anti-spyware Warnings; Can't Run HijackThis!

    My desktop has been hijacked and taken over by warnings of spyware and there is a red "X" on the bottom of my screen that constantly pops open a bubble the says "Your computer is infected!" after which it says that there is spyware on my computer. Random websites of anti-spyware materials pop up on their own. Please tell me what to do to get rid of this mess. Also, the worst part is that HijackThis won't seem to work on my computer anymore so I can't post a log. I downloaded another copy and once it installed on my desktop, I double-click on the icon and nothing happens!

    Hi

    Download and install TrendMicro HijackThis
    * Once installed open HijackThis by clicking Start > Programs > HijackThis and click the button labeled
    Do a system scan only

    * Click the scan button in the lower left hand corner of the interface and HijackThis will quickly scan your system.
    * Once the scan is complete the scan button will now read save log. Click this button to save the log file to your PC. Once you select where you would like to save the file it will open in your systems default text editor. Typically this application is Notepad. Post the log here.

    Hi Blade81,

    I cannot run HijackThis from the desktop or from Start>Programs>HijackThis. When I click on the icon on the desktop, the working hourglass shows up for a few seconds, disappears, and then nothing happens. Also, when I click on Start, the Programs button and many other buttons like Control Panel have disappeared. I also can't seem to open Task Manager. Please tell me what to do from here.

    I will be at work all day today so I won't be able to come and check these forums until later on tonight.

    Hi

    Please navigate into HijackThis installation folder and rename HijackThis.exe file -> whatever.exe. Try running hjt again

    If it still doesn't work then do this, please:
    • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized, if not you'll find it in c:\rsit folder)

    I'd like you to read the this thread.

    Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

    Delete these folders afterwards:

    D:\Program Files\BitComet
    C:\Program Files\Kazaa Lite Resurrection

    Empty Recycle Bin.

    After that:

    Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

    The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

    Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

    The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

    Please continue as follows:

    1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
      Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

    2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.


    When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

    Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

    C:\ComboFix.txt
    New HijackThis log.

    Blade81,

    I went ahead and deleted BitComet. I couldn't find KazaaLite in my C: Drive but I do think I deleted it quite a while ago. I wouldn't know why a KazaaLite file would show up again in the logs.

    Also, I downloaded ComboFix and the Windows Recovery Pack. When I drag the Windows Recovery icon to the ComboFix icon, nothing happens. An hourglass shows up for a second but the program doesn't run at all.

    Please let me know what to do from here. I will be at work all day and will come back in the evening to follow your suggestions.

    Hi

    Rename ComboFix.exe file -> ComboFxx.exe before dragging the Windows Recovery icon to the ComboFix icon.
