Hi,recently when i run Spybot it gets half way through a scan then shuts down the computer, even in safe mode,Iam running 1.4 with all the latest updates, and have reinstalled spybot thinking maybe it had become corrupted, but it is still happening.also my AVG email scanner keeps turning itself off.I have run adaware,AVG,microsoft antispyware, trojan hunter and trend micro online, and the system appears to be clean.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If by "... shuts down the computer ..." you mean that the computer powers off, read on otherwise ignore this post.

Spybot is quite CPU intensive. It is possible that the CPU overheating and the system is shutting down to protect the processor. Make sure that the fans are running and that dust is cleared from any ventilation ports in the case.

The problem can happen in both desktops and laptops, although the problem is more prevalent in laptops.

If you have a laptop with one of the one of the following processors:
  • Mobile Pentium III-M
  • Mobile Pentium 4-M
  • Mobile Pentium 4
  • Mobile Pentium M / Centrino
  • Mobile AMD
Take a look at following suggestion by 100mill:
If you have a desktop consider opening the case and checking to make sure the CPU heat sink is not too dusty. Doubt that this can be a problem, read the following threads:

Thanks for all your help, the laptop is now sorted. After 10 days of work, and thinking there was something nasty lurking in it,it was as simple as hoovering the fan.now it runs perfectly and dosent sound as though its about to take off.thanks again..

Who ya gonna' call?

!!! Dust Busters !!! :band:

Always thought Spy/Adware was just a lot of hot air!

Thanks

Sometimes solutions are easy! I had the same problem with Spybot, after setting my cpu-fan higher, everything´s allright again!
Thanks!
Best regards Mike

I know how we can convince them. Just have them open the case and touch their finger on the Processor heat sink.

If the sight of caked on dust or a frozen/clogged heat sink fan doesn't convince them, the branding they get from the heat sink itself ought to!
