Hi --

I started earlier today with a post about Spybot. I've since read the before you post instructions and now I'm ready with the hijack this log.

Yesterday, at around noon, I got hit by some virus. Some of the names that have come up through Spybot are:

Win32.ZenoSearch
eAcceleration
IRC.crt
Smitfraud-C.
virtumonde
Virtumonde.generic
Wild Tangent

I've run Spybot a few times, but it gives me a message that some items are remaining. Here's the log. By the way, I did have P2P, but, after reading your advice, I have deleted it.

I posted yesterday, but I think I've fallen through the cracks since posts filed after mine have gotten replies, but I still don't have any answers.

To review, I've run the Spybot several times and the program says there are 3 items that can't be removed. The symptoms also have not gone away (explorer trying to open on its own, error messages about e-mails that I have not sent (to a country with the domain name .ru).

I read the before you post page, downloaded hijack this and this is the log. Please, please help me! I don't want to follow the steps of the other users since their problems may be just slight different from mine . . .

Hi

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer to make sure it won't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:

Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode
On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop

Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

Also, I thought It would be a good idea to back up my word, pdf, jpeg, and powerpoint files before starting. (I have a separate portable hard drive). Is there a chance I would be transferring the virus and infecting the portable drive by doing this

Hi

I think you can backup those. Haven't ever used Symantec antivirus but I assume it behaves like Norton. Right click its icon in system tray on lower right corner and select disable option.

Hi – I'm afraid I didn't get very far before I got stuck.

I went onto http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix and read the instructions several times. I downloaded the combofix, and then next step was to download the Windows Recovery Console. I fell into the category of a person who has Windows XP, but does not have the disk. I was directed to go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994 and choose the appropriate download. I followed the steps to determine which Windows XP I have, and I found out that I had "Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2". Although it said neither "home" nor "professional" the instructions said "If you are using Windows XP Media Center, then you should select the Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2," so I downloaded XP, Service Pack 2. The Microsoft website had six steps to follow for installation. Since the website didn't tell me to go through those steps, I didn't.

The next step was "Once the Microsoft file has finished downloading, you should drag it on top of the ComboFix icon and let your mouse button go."
That is where I am stuck. Since I'm working on a lap top, I don't have a separate mouse. I tried following this step with both the right click and the left click of the mouse pad. When I use the right click, I get a message that says "open with". If I click that, combofix begins to run (a blue screen opens and it says it is preparing to run). If I use my right click, combofix also just begins to run (but with no "open with" message). After releasing the mouse, it is also clear that the windows recovery icon is not moving. What should I do? The instructions were pretty clear that Combofix is supposed to install the windows recovery and that the installation is suppose to happen before running the combofix. I have even tried following this last step from windows explorer and that doesn't work either. . . .I would appreciate your help. What should I do?

Hi

When you run ComboFix without dragging anything to it does ComboFix ask you if you want to install recovery console? It should get and install rc automatically.

I was so paranoid about following the steps EXACTLY that I didn't let it run. It did occur to me to let it run, but I figured, no, everyone is constantly warned that this stuff is no joke, so who are you to "think" it's probably okay without checking first, so I checked first . . . I'll go let it run and see if it asks me about installing recovery.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Note: Uncheck MSN toolbar option if you don't want to install it.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Hi –

Wow. I've been up all night doing this (though I got some sleep during the Kaspersky scan). It's so hard.

The only peer to peer thing I had was utorrent. I had already deleted the utorrent several days ago (after reading before you post). I have now deleted the folders and emptied the trash.

At first I could not upload the second file that you asked me to upload:

c:\windows\system32\setexdec.dll

When I tried to send it as an e-mail, I got an error message saying the file is empty. I got a similar message when I tried to upload it directly. When I put my mouse on it, and on “properties” it said it was created on April 16, 2007, was modified on December 1, 2008, and that it was accessed today at 4:09 a.m. It opens with: “unknown application.” When I tried to just drop the name into the upload bar, it said: “you do not have permission to open this file. See the owner of the file or an administrator to obtain permission. However, after going running the Kaspersky Online Scanner, I was able to do the online scan of the file and the results are below.

By the way, all of the error messages that I was getting every time I re-booted seemed to be gone except for one:

“Your stopSign installation has been corrupted. Reinstalling may fix the problem. To re-download the software, please visit www.stopsign.com./install”

The computer also seems to have stopped trying to launch explorer on its own.

Hi

Delete items in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine folder.

Delete also these files:
c:\windows\system32\dosipmon32.dll
c:\windows\system32\delegme.dll
c:\windows\system32\setexdec.dll

We'll get rid of quarantined and system restore items a bit later.

“Your stopSign installation has been corrupted. Reinstalling may fix the problem. To re-download the software, please visit www.stopsign.com./install”

Looking at your logs it seems you have/had both Symantec (Norton) Antivirus and StopSign Anti-Virus installed. It's recommended have only one antivirus program installed in same system. You may either uninstall remaining parts of StopSign A-V and keep Symantec one or then uninstall Symantec solution and reinstall StopSign A-V.

Post a fresh hjt log when you've decided which one to keep and removed the other one.

Hi – I found a separate folder called Quarantine. Should I delete that as well?

Open notepad and then copy and paste the bolded lines below into it. Go to File > save as and name the file fixes.bat, change the Save as type to all files and save it to your desktop.

Hi, no, that error message appears to be gone. But there is a new error: a windows installer "preparing to install" window comes up for Vongo every time I re-boot. I tried to remove Vongo from the add remove programs because I didn't know what it was and I though it could also be an antivirus. Since then the "preparing to install" window has popped up. I tried deleting the file from c

rogram files, but that did not help. Everytime I re-boot, the preparing to install window re-launches.
