View Full Version : browser hijacked!!!

2006-12-30, 00:27
I recently downloaded a file that upon executing released an assortment of viruses and adware. I've scanned my machine several times, including in safe mode, with AVG and Adaware. However, my browser remains hijacked. I can't reset my home page and the system won't let me view the contents of my temporary internet files folder. The home page is always set to c:\secure32.html if that sounds familiar to anyone. Also, some of the viruses discovered were Spysheriff and a number of trojan horses like BackDoor.Generic4.EUS, Collected.Z, PSW.Generic2.WLK, and Generic2.NHX.

My HJT log file is as follows:

Welcome to the forum, please read and follow the instructions in this link which was pinned to the top of the forum.
"BEFORE you POST" -Preliminary Steps
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

Follow these directions also: Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm)

Make sure to restart the computer and post the required antivirus scan, the report from the Smitfraudfix "Search" and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) We have a Vundo infection to deal with, it looks like this:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A9CB8FDD-B26B-422C-8E24-E0C8E64E918A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqolj.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtqolj - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\awtqolj.dll
Understand the Vundofix tool may not recognize the file and it may have to run several times to find all of the Vundo files. You want all Vundo files to say "Have been deleted" before moving on.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

(hold those logs until we finish)

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(some items may be removed by Smitfraudfix or Vundofix, not to worry just don't miss any)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe //ICWLaunch

O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtqolj - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\awtqolj.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: wintfj32 - wintfj32.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

c:\secure32.html <<< delete that file if there

C:\WINDOWS\system32\autosys.exe <<< delete that file

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the report from Smitfraudfix, the Vundofix report and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running now.

Thanks

The computer is still having issues, I assume because the awtqolj.dll file is still in c:\windows\system32
I'm sure you can tell that from looking at the HJT report. I really appreciate all of the help you're giving me.

Yes, you are right, that Vundo infection must be removed, but first:

1) First Smitfraudfix log you posted:
SmitFraudFix v2.132

Scan done at 22:46:58.51, Fri 12/29/2006
Run from C:\Documents and Settings\Jon\Desktop\SmitfraudFix
OS: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] - Windows_NT
The filesystem type is NTFS
Fix run in normal mode

Second Smitfraudfix log you posted:
SmitFraudFix v2.132

Scan done at 22:46:58.51, Fri 12/29/2006
Run from C:\Documents and Settings\Jon\Desktop\SmitfraudFix
OS: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] - Windows_NT
The filesystem type is NTFS
Fix run in normal mode
__________________________

You have posted the same log twice, did you follow the directions to run the "Clean" function in Smitfraudfix in SAFE MODE?

If so, please post that log before you do anything else.

2) Instructions in Vundofix include uploading a file:

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com
Did you do this? If you followed the directions, there is a good change Atribune has already added C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqolj.dll
to Vundofix, so give it a try and see what happens. If you did not upload the file, then post the results of Smitfraudfix "Clean" and make me aware of that fact. If you upload it now, perhaps he will have it added by morning, so give the fix a try then.

I will add you may try to manually delete that file if you wish, since you are saying no other Vundo files showed in the vundofix report. You can also try this:

How to use the Delete on Reboot tool http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\awtqolj.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now. It is unlikely it will work, but worth a try. Because the Vundo trojan logs in on winlogon, it is hard to remove, that is why Atribune tries to help us by added files like this when we follow his instructions and upload them to him.

Thanks

I spoke too soon. Several of the apps I use on my computer are acting strange and then locking up. I can't even kill them with task manager. I'm going to try reinstalling them to see if it clears this up.

Also, I still can't view the subfolders under temporary internet files.

Let's have a look at a Blacklight scan in case a rootkit is also at work?

Please download F-Secure BlackLight Beta:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml

Save it to its own folder in the Desktop
Double-click blbeta.exe to run the program
Click : Scan
A list of all items found is created

The list is in the BlackLight folder on the Desktop, and named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx are numbers).

Please provide the log created by BlackLight in your next reply.

Please post a fresh HJT log with that.

Thanks

Looks like a clean Blacklight scan and a clean HJT log. Great job, how is the computer runing now. Were you able to upload that file to Atribune ok?

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

First of all I want to thank you for the awesome help! You're very generous with your time Phil.

Well, I still am having trouble with some of the programs I use, but I plan on reinstalling them soon to see if it makes a difference. They all use video (codecs) and reallybog down the processor. I think I'll also reninstall my codecs. Other than that, well I still can't see the subfolders in the temporary internet files folder. But that shouldn't be too much of a problem as the ATF-Cleaner should clean it out for me.

Thanks again and have a wonderful new year!

Have you read this sticky:

You might spot something here to help:

any error message associated with this issue?

Thanks:laugh:

I don't receive any error messages. The programs just lock up and I can't close/kill them no matter what I do. So I have to reboot my system to clear it up. I'm leaning towards reloading my system.

What programs are these again? Have you considered it may be the program. If you know they are safe programs, try uninstalling and reinstalling them again.

Also try running System File Checker in case a Windows file is corrupt or missing: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Thanks
