Hi, A while ago, my uncle bought a new pc running windows xp home edition. Since then, various members of my family have downloaded spyware laden files. It takes about 1 hour to boot up and launch AOL 9.0. I have used Ccleaner, AVG, Norton and adware to no avail.

Could somebody please help me?

I have been contemplating installing kubunto 6.06 but aol wont work on linux and my uncle has discarded his OEM of XP and his restore disks.

Hi Matthew and welcome to the forum. Have you fixed your problems? If not I will see what I can do, please start like this.

1) Follow the instructions in this link which you must have missed:
"BEFORE you POST" -Preliminary Steps
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

Post the results of the free online scan, several choices are available in the link.

2) Use one or more of these free online scanners to scan this item and post the results:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TaskMon] C:\WINDOWS\System32\taskmon.exe
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

You may need to show hidden files and folders to see it:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

3) I edited out your email addy, not a good idea to post it in an open forum, bots will spam you to death.

Restart the computer and post the results of the free online virus scan, the results of the scan of taskmon.exe, a new HJT log and any additional information you think will help us.

Thanks

Because of where it is running from, it is probably a very nasty trojan, that is why you are scanning it:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=TaskMon&btnG=Google+Search

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/taskmon.exe-5665.html
TaskMon
Filename: taskmon.exe
Command: Unknown at this time.
Description: Added by the MYDOOM.A or MYDOOM.J WORMS! Note - this is not the legitimate Win9x/Me file of the same name which resides in C:\Windows as this version resides in C:\Windows\System (Win9x/Me), C:\Winnt\System32 (WinNT/2K), or C:\Windows\System32 (WinXP). It is not normally on a WinXP system
