virus removal help!

During Christmas vacation my grandsons were using my computer to browse. They left me a very undesirable gift in the form of a computer virus. I heard about this forum from someone that successfully eliminated problems. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, and sorry for the wait. You have some nasty stuff on your computer and this could be caused by the fact you are running with no Service Pack and no Critical Updates for your Windows Operating System.

I cannot say for sure how your security has been compromised. We need to start like this:

Update Your Windows XP.
You are currently using an unpatched version of Windows XP.
Before attempting to remove malware, it is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a.
Get SP1a here : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx
You should also get SP2, but NOT NOW, rather only after your machine is clean.
After updating your Windows to SP1a, post a new HijackThis log please, using the Post Reply button.

Thank you for your response.

I have been trying to download SP1A but it keeps telling me ActiveX is not enabled. When I go thru the suggested procedures to enable and/or download it does not work. It also gives an error message regarding cryptographic services not being enabled. I've tried searching, taking suggested steps and trying to install sp1a in safe mode but have had no luck.

If I try to reboot my computer it will almost finish rebooting and then begin rebooting again over and over again. At the present time in order to get my computer to boot up I have to first boot in safe mode, try a system restore, it comes back saying it can not restore, then I tell it to continue and it will finish booting. It gives a bunch of error messages which I have to close out before I can open anything. It will allow me to operate most things but will not allow spybot search and destroy run. It also continually gives an error message stating:

Thanks for the feedback, how long have you been taking this computer online without a Service Pack and with no Critical Updates? This is cyber-suicide with all on the junk on the internet anymore. We need to get at least that much done, or you will just reinfect as soon as you go online and my time is more valuable than that as I am sure yours is also. Please keep this computer offline unless you are troubleshooting, you will continue to pick up infections.


I have been trying to download SP1A but it keeps telling me ActiveX is not enabled.

It also gives an error message regarding cryptographic services not being enabled.
First we must just check the Cryptographic Services is actually running on your machine. To do this:

Start the Administrative Tools utility in Control Panel.
Double-click Services. (this will open the services window)
Right-click Cryptographic Services, and then click Properties.
Click Automatic for Startup type, and then click Start.

You can now try to reinstall Windows XP Service Pack 1

Let me know if you can download those updates now, and it will take a while. DO NOT download SP2 at this time.

Let me try to give you some relief from the malware as you work on getting the computer updated.

First, it looks like you are running both Norton Anti-Virus and AVG Free anti-virus, if this is the case see this:
You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.

Uninstall one of those programs.

Please complete the instructions in the numbered order.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Download: SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log


(save those logs until we finish)

4) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall: WildTangent

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\hrcopul.dll <<< delete that file

C:\DOCUMENTS amd SETTINGS~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ <<< delete the contents of that folder (not the folder)

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the log from SDFix and a new HJT log.

I have been using it for quite awhile without SP1A. I will follow your suggestions until I get the approriate steps done and get SP1A loaded and then respond back. It will probably take awhile but I will respond back when done so as not to take up your time. Thank you for your help and suggestions. I will stay off line until I get to this point. I should be able to have needed files downloaded elsewhere and transfer them VIA disc or flash drive.

If you have any doubt about the importance of Service Packs and Critical Updates, I would suggest you ask Microsoft about that.

You will probably find that due to the amount of Critical Updates you are behind along with the size of the Service Pack, that you will have to download online. My suggestion about staying offline was meant to apply to when it is unnecessary because of the malware having access to the internet and downloading more just on you.

Thank you for your help and taking the time to analyze and pass on your suggestions to me. My machine is so messed up that I'm just going to blast everything and reload from scratch. I will be sure to follow your advise and load all service packs immediately and also load and keep current with spyware and virus detection programs. Do you have a preference between the two virus programs I had? I will be sure to load only one and keep it up to date.
